Overall, we had a pleasant stay. But for the price, the value was unfortunately not there. Several areas where we felt they missed the mark for marketing as a high end ryokan. Room was musty and linens and bedding smelled like mildew. Outdoor onsen had a nice ambiance, however the water temperature was lukewarm at only 38 C in the mornjng, which is less than the temp you get in a shower, and the bathing area was quite small and shallow, enough room for 1 person. This was a huge disappointment for a high end ryokan where the star of the show is the onsen and dining experience. Many hotels and airbnbs we stayed during our month in Japan had higher water temperatures than this. The shower also turned itself off every minute or so, requiring you to push a lever in order to restart water flow like public bathroom faucets.
While difficult to control being that each unit was located outdoors, there were quite a bit of mosquitoes around which made it unpleasant to be outside in the onsen. A few also made it into our room at night while coming back from dinner.
Room is updated and modern, set in a fairly remote area of Yufuin. Easy to get to by car, but almost half hr walk into Yufuin main street.
Dinner was in main communal dining area. Had a good selection of Japanese whiskey, sake, and shochu.
There was no turn down service while at dinner, nothing additional left in our room for the evening. No explanation or demonstration of donning yukata, making it confusing to know what should be worn to dinner.
For a place with only 10 units, felt the service was lacking and just not that personal or attentive for the price. Usually I would attribute this to language barrier in Japan, but the staff actually all spoke English as most of clientele were foreign.
There was also no real commons areas, other than a small bar area. Not much else to do on the property, further lending to need for the staff to really shine and make the stay memorable. Overall, all these misses left a lot to be desired ... any additions to the experience would have been welcomed. In the end, we really wanted to like this stay, as the staff were all very friendly, but felt in the end, the value was just not there for...

The grounds were wonderfully cultivated gardens. The attention to detail was remarkable, the staff was delightful, and the restaurant was generously accommodating of vegetarians. The location was remote enough from Yufuin to take advantage of natural forest surroundings, but also just a 15 minute (steep) walk from the Yufuin shops and 20 minutes from the Mount Yufuin West Trailhead. Super highly...

It was my first time visiting a place in Japan with a private open-air bath, and it was truly amazing. โข Pickup service available โข Staff who can speak Korean โข Private rooms separated from one another โข Real hot spring water that you can enjoy throughout your stay in the room โข Staff are extremely kind and respond quickly โข On the day of check-in, they can pick you up from Yufuin Station if reserved in advance, and theyโll drop you off as well
There was a minor issue with the room, but the staffโs prompt response made the stay comfortable. Even if it rains, the open-air bath has a roof, so it seems usable in any weather.
Itโs incredibly private, and the landscaping around the open-air bath gives the feeling of being deep in the mountains.
Also, the path from the room to the lobby feels like a lovely walking trail.
Next time, Iโd love to visit with my parents. It was such a wonderful experience, and Iโm leaving with...
