Yufuin Tsuka No Ma — Local services in Yufu

We stayed 2 nights in this lovely Roykan in Yufuin in December.||We landed in Fukuoka in the morning and headed straight to buy the bus ticket for the 2 hours ride to Yufuin. Unlike big cities like Tokyo or Osaka where the bus service is very regular, we found that there were no more bus tickets available. The other alternative is to head to the city and take the train from there or pre book your bus ticket.||The Roykan is just a 10 mins taxi ride from the train station and costs us Yen 880. The check in was simple and efficient and we were lead to our room in no time. ||The room was super clean and well maintained and large enough to sleep 4. We have our own private Onsen in our room (big enough to fit in 6 persons) which is very convenient as we can go anytime. The Roykan has a public Onsen and also Onsen for families. The difference between all the Onsen is the size. All the Onsen have cobalt blue water (similar to the blue lagoon in Iceland) which is very nice. ||Our package includes dinner and breakfast and the quality of the food is of the highest quality and delicious. Service is very good and although we did not speak Japanese we managed to get by.||Rooms do not provide wifi however it is available at the lobby.||This place is very quiet and is in a beautiful rural setting. We visited the town which has lots of shopping and restaurants during the day.||If you are looking for somewhere to relax and enjoy the slow life, this is the place to be. Now known as Tsuka no Ma （束の間), this ryokan is quiet, personal, and well kept. This ryokan is up a large hill past the main shopping street, so it is a slight drive if you want to go there, but this ryokan was a worthwhile stay. We did not go to the large public onsen, because we stayed in a room with our own personal onsen. The personal onsen brings in water from the actual hotspring (you can tell because it has a certain smell), which means you get all of the benefits of onsen water in your own room. Each "room" is its own separate house, with a kitchen (fridge, microwave, stove), living room, bedroom, and bathroom. The food is delicious - we had steak that melts in your mouth for dinner with onsen purin (pudding made with onsen steam), and a traditional japanese breakfast with rice, fish, egg boiled in onsen water known as "onsen tamago". The staff is very polite and it was a very relaxing experience. We wore our borrowed yukata (clothes) around to dinner and in the room which most people seemed to do. We really enjoyed our experience here! The only downside was that there was no wifi in the rooms (only in the lobby/dining area) - our room/house happened to be close to the lobby so we got weak...

Tsukanoma is located uphill of the Yufuin basin, where is relatively quiet and calm area in Yufuin. It’s a bit away from central location and seems taking a taxi would be the best access (it’s possible to go on foot too though).|I stayed at this ryokan with the no meal option (Still, they have a cozy restaurant which serves very good Onsen-steamed meals. And we enjoyed healthy and delicious dinner there with reasonable price). |The room is quite large and maintained decently. Every villa has private bathes for each and they also have big open-air Onsen which is unforgettably beautiful and relaxing (actually I was there for about 2 hours!). Onsen water is extremely smooth, no smell, proper temperature, and so whitish that I couldn’t see the bottom (I’m not sure how). Mt. Yufu can be seen from the big bathes during the day. I believe the most prominent features of this ryokan is the extremely excellent Onsen. Onsen and meal option without staying can be also available. |Service is perfect, the meals are healthy, Onsen is a heaven on earth. If you are looking for somewhere you can relax from the bottom of your heart and want to be spoiled, I assure Tsukanoma is the best...
