麻小二老火锅 — Restaurant in George Town

What a lovely, unique and atmospheric hotpot eatery. Located at Jln Gurdwara, a stone's throw from Hin Bus Depot, is this little China inspired hotpot place, operating in a compact warren-like old shoplot/townhouse. Place is refurbished to create the ambience of a traditional Chinese inn or wineshop. Eating a meal here transports the diner (with at least a measure of fanciful imagination) to a place in faraway Sichuan, Chongqing or Hunan province. Try out their signature sliced beef, to add into the dual broth pot (clear soup/spicy mala), and wash it down with the sweet in-house Plum Wine or ice cold Tsingtao beer. Very disappointed with the service and hygiene of this restaurant. I had to ask multiple times for them to refill the sauces, cilantro, and other condiments — they kept ignoring the request. Only when new customers stood there waiting did they finally respond, just to say, "out of stock." This happened while staff were clearly free and just standing around.

What’s worse, I spotted a cockroach crawling on the floor (see photo). Totally unacceptable for a restaurant.

We were greeted rudely, not greeted at all and practically grunted at. This staff was very rude. He did not even want to give us chairs to sit on. Other staff was more interested in cleaning his phone case than providing us with a menu to choose items from so we can eat. He seemed to have endless side projects in practicing his calligraphy and photography skills on the local strays. Third staff seemed to resent us for being customers at their restaurant.
