KOMTAR used to be THE main shopping mall in Penang Island, back in the 80s and 90s, but the place gradually lost its luster when more modern complexes like Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall opened from the 00s onwards.

This landmark has indeed regained much of its mojo in recent years, thanks to the state government maintaining their administrative center there, which helps to ensure a steady stream of visitors on weekdays. While the above-ground connectivity of KOMTAR's large IT Mall (the biggest on the Island) with the popular adjacent Prangin Mall and 1st Avenue keeps the crowd coming even on weekends.

And with the opening of the TOP in 2016, this finally made KOMTAR become the icon that it once was, in the eyes of any tourist visiting Penang - along with the biggest IT mall in George Town, occupying part of what used to be the Super KOMTAR Department Store!
