I was torn between hate and dislike, the former being rather a strong word I'd normally avoid using except in the most exceptional situations. Tbh, I'm not a big fan of those bookshops where books are displayed (not stored or piled, mind you) up to the ceiling. It reeks of cheap theatrics, and the sort of thing that'd appeal to juveniles, and not bona fide book lovers or buyers. The fact that the store didn't see much custom is testimony enough that this sort of superficial gimmick is not going to help push sales or populate the stores with visitors. My idea of a genuine mega bookstore (if at all this is necessary, although my preference runs to small, compact establishments on a more intimate scale) is probably something like the old Foyle's on Charing Cross Rd, in the days of those wooden shelves, and before they occupied the present premises. That said, the layout of the Tropicana joint is far from ideal. Sections are a little haphazardly divided. Books are piled on shelves indiscriminately, without any attempt to link them by theme or period or some other marker. A book, say, on the Russian Revolution or the Stalingrad offensive would probably be lying next to a history of the Crusades or a biography of some Elizabethan spymaster. You get the idea? I don't want to start on selection, although I make no apologies for admitting I'm not a big fan of those cheap contemporary editions of classics issued by Vintage or Collins, which are to be found in abundance here. Fancy covers, but very little else to give satisfaction, like a China tart from Jalan Alor. What did I purchase? About 3 books, one of which was a history of gardens from a political perspective, an old publication that wasn't available anywhere else, and which I was quite astonished to find here. But that's about it, really. There's nothing inspiring here for genuine book lovers (you're not one if you happen to be reading Sophie Kinsella or one of those endlessly tiresome vampiric trilogies or quintets or...
