Moco Museum — Local services in Amsterdam

Here’s my quote for you, “in art we trust, in humanity we don’t”. I have been to countless modern art museums and art galleries but never have I ever regretted entering them like I did with Moco. As many have said already, a very small house cramped by headless chickens of crowds. With an entry ticket of almost 25€, you better buy yourself a nice meal somewhere or a couple of “smokes” and you’ll be happier. Credit must be given where it’s due, the museum has a nice collection of art pieces and you’ll enjoy them if you’re a modern and pop are lover. Although nothing you haven’t seen in a free pop up art gallery in your local town. but the organization is horrible. Turning an old and tiny Dutch house to a money milking machine attracting wannabe instagram models and hunting the next insta story ruining the whole experience of museums and art. Sure, gift shops are generally expensive but this takes the lead. Most of the piece are by Jean-Michel Basquiat so they come with high prices tag like 20€ for a tiny keychain. Or a 450€ jacket (that is priced at 350€ on the official Jean-Michel Basquiat clothing website) You go downstairs for the media area and it’s filled with groups of people taking pictures and blocking the majority of the tiny rooms for so long. By the time they’re done, another groups comes in. The only “enjoyable” part was the video by Reisinger, a deep and emotional 9 minutes video about existential crises only to be placed by the toilets.. all you can hear is people farting, queuing for the toilet and talking loudly , and smacking the door shut. Good thing the video can be watched for free on Youtube.. Then you go out to the garden and all the benches are occupied by the massive crowds. Even though the pink bed had a sign that it’s for pictures only and not for chilling, a group people were laying down for over 10 minutes long, almost napping, and the museum staff were outside couldn’t care less. All in all, don’t go during Summer because there’s zero ventilation, don’t go in the afternoon, and generally don’t go at all.

If you truly appreciate art and want to have a great experience to absorb the art, go to a different museum. But if you are a teenager looking for your next cool instagram story or your next TikTok and have a main character energy, then definitely grab...

Wow! Blown away!!

Not the largest museum in Amsterdam but one you won’t want to miss. It is a must-see, whether on its own or as a dessert to a visit to one of the larger entree galleries nearby.

I am admittedly a huge Banksy fan and have several prints at my home and office. The Banksy collection at the Moco Amsterdam drew me in, but the museum is so much more than one artist. Every floor is amazing and will be thoroughly enjoyed. I was very impressed.

The museum does an excellent job balancing out accessibility with crowd control. While fairly full, it was easy to acquire tickets and it wasn’t so packed that I couldn’t enjoy each piece. The gift shop has wonderful items for sale (normally I find gift shops a waste, but I spent a fair amount of time and money enjoying it too).

I will admit to being unsophisticated and naive, but I enjoyed the Moco more than the neighboring Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. Tickets were fairly priced, and it doesn’t need to take hours and hours to have a good experience.

My only real gripe would be that the technology of the audio portion leaves a lot to be desired. I am glad it doesn’t require cumbersome headsets, but the website kicked me out dozens of times requiring me to re-register and re-log back in each time. Also, it was a bit hard to match the audio to the exhibits. Maybe it was my phone and my ignorance but it was a bit frustrating, especially because I personally really needed the audio to appreciate the art. Maybe more people will visit and the museum can make improving this aspect a priority. A simple app would solve all of my complaints....in the mean time remember your earbuds!
