AVOID IT. Poorly managed, not worth the money.
I was genuinely excited when I first joined Fitness Portal. It’s close to home, had decent equipment, a pool, and even though it was quite expensive (the “Transporter” membership $79.50 NZD for two people), it seemed to have everything we needed. Unfortunately, that excitement didn’t last long.
Parking is a nightmare They cut down the number of parking spots by more than half, which makes it nearly impossible to find a space during normal hours. Meanwhile, management made sure to reserve a few spots for themselves.
Bathrooms are neglected The men's bathrooms are in terrible shape—dirty, smelly, and clearly not cleaned often enough. Showers are broken, I'm pretty sure I saw mold in there and spiderwebs, and overall it just feels unhygienic.
Broken equipment stays broken Some machines are fine, but when things break, they stay that way. The cable machines has had faulty adjustment handles for over a year.
Pool looks good, but don’t use it We joined partly for the pool, but it’s so heavily chlorinated that just a few minutes in there made me feel sick. Now I understand why it’s always empty.
Sauna and ice bath? Hit or miss These are nice extras—when they actually work. Most of the time, they don’t.
Trainers are great—but many have left There are some really good trainers here, but quite a few have moved on. You’ll hear stories about how poorly management treats the staff, and it’s not hard to believe.
Bottom line This gym had potential, but management has let it go downhill fast. Poor maintenance, bad decisions, and a general lack of care for customers, makes this the most poorly run gym I’ve been to.
Save your money and go somewhere that values its members.
Look at all other real reviews - you'll see all the same issues and management has never addressed anything except writing a ChatGPT answer in here.
[UPDATE] The review is based on the real experience, while the claims you make in the answer section on Google Maps is just that - words.
E.g. 60 car parks. Are you talking about the ones which the staff at the reception asks to kindly pay for if you stay longer than an hour?
Seems the management takes pride in answering all the reviews on Google Maps themselves. Well, for me as a customer, fixing the underlying issues would be way better than some words on an app. Maybe invest the...
Read moreThis gym is not terrible. It has huge potential that falls massively short due to small things that effect it in a big way in my view. It has great equipment, especially for legs. Good parking and very friendly FOH staff. It however is no where near a $22.50 a week gym: Gym is incredibly dark and cold. This creates an almost depressing vibe while training.on top of this they have a huge TV screen inside the work out area that blinds you when you train (being a bit dramatic but is very irritating). Some PT’s are respectful and some have the “I own the gym mentality” .My partner and I were training the one day and the PT Mia was going through our personal stuff on the bench. Flicking our jackets as she was looking for something.left my phones and earphone case exposed when she was done. Super professional. Most mornings you can’t use the stretch area as the PT’s use the entire area for classes. Not blaming them, it’s a space problem. Lockers in the change room are electronic and don’t work most of the time. So your stuff is sometimes not secure. Dumbbell work out area is a tiny strip as you walk in. Very uncomfortable as benches are near on top of dumbbell racks. As I said In the beginning, massive potential for a great gym. Just put together wrong. If this was an $8-$12 a week gym. Then it would be worth every cent.
This review is my view on this gym. I only write it as I pay my hard earned money to use it and so that entitles me to my opinion (this review). I don’t dislike this gym only pointing out what I don’t...
Read moreBeen going for a while so can mention some pros and cons:
Pros: Equipment is pretty solid and a good variety. Lots of free weights and benches. Never too busy. Even at 5.30pm I rarely ever have to wait for equipment which is really great. Even though there are less dedicated parking spots now it is still much easier to get a park compared to other gyms. However, the majority of parks are the Parkable ones which need to be used occasionally so they’re not all free with the membership. Most trainers/employees are friendly and I have only had positive interactions with other members.
Cons: Maintenance on equipment. This mainly relates to cable machines as they sometimes are randomly broken often. But also ripped up upholstery and such. Majority of locker locks do not work. Pretty sure this has never been fixed since opening. Bit annoying when it is busy and I have to search for a locker that works. I am not really worried about theft but it is nice to just know it's locked safely away. Taking away the sauna for the entry membership. For essentially double the price ($44.5 atm) you get the sauna again. Definitely gyms with better maintenance and amenities around that price range. Sometimes cold interactions. Blonde girl at reception usually doesn't respond to greetings and can sometimes make that initial impression when entering the gym feel a bit awkward. Probably not the best impression for newer members.
I hope the gym can continue and improve as it is a fantastic location and has a lot...
