Marcelo & Co Hair Design — Local services in Waitematā

During my stay in Auckland, I booked to have my hair highlighted at Marcelo & Co. The salon had impressive reviews and I was excited to have my hair done as a treat to myself while I was solo travelling Aotearoa.

Unfortunately I was quite upset with the end result. Despite providing a reference photo, my finished hair did not meet my expectations and deviated significantly from the desired outcome. The before and after photos are virtually indistinguishable. I was upset as I'd paid over $300 for this service and felt that what had been promised between myself and the stylist had not at all been delivered.

I returned the following day to express my concerns. I was polite, calm and respectful in explaining my discontent and my desire for at least some compensation, but the stylist responded by saying that I was “aggressive” and “disrespectful”, and that it wasn’t “attractive” for a young girl like me to come in and act in such a way.

I was taken aback by his comments. I felt spoken down to as a young woman and invalidated, but most of all I was disappointed that the salon couldn’t apologise nor take responsibility for the end result of my hair. It was obvious that I didn't receive the service I was promised or expected.

I was travelling to Wellington in the next couple of days and my schedule was packed until then. I wasn’t able, nor did I want to have another hair appointment with the salon.

Ultimately, I didn't get any compensation from the salon and left feeling quite deflated. I felt as though my concerns were not taken seriously. The least I expected was an apology or recognition that I wasn't satisfied, but instead I was told that I wouldn't receive any compensation. It was quite an upsetting experience overall, not one that I will want to remember of my time here in Auckland.

Tanya at Marcelo and Co is my stylist and she always give me a great haircut after listening to what I want. I have thick wavy hair and she cuts expertly. I’m very happy with my cut this week as we have gone for a new look which I love. This is my first visit to Marcelo and Co and I love the quiet restful ambience of the salon and was welcomed by Danny and shown the car park. I met Marcel and both owners are welcoming and friendly. Would recommend the salon and the three professionals to anyone looking for a totally positive hair styling experience. Thursday 16 May 2024 Another fabulous haircut from Tanya. I had grown out a style which I wanted to change and Tanya has, as always , listened to what I’ve wanted and cut my hair expertly. Very happy. Of course, will return for more of the same regularly. I love the restful ambience of the salon. 29 Jan 2025 Another great experience. Great cut from Tanya and as always a treat to go to a salon that you can relax in. Next appointment booked and in the diary.

22 May 2025 Another great haircut from Tanya as well as a great scalp massage and shampoo. Great salon if you like your stylist to listen to you and advise on the best styling to suit. Consistently good.

17 July 1925 Always happy with my haircut from Tanya . It’s great to have your hairdresser listen to you and blow dry your hair the way you want. I must be a pain but Tanya just smiles as she knows she’ll do what I want in her way. A great combo so you walk out of the salon happy.

Iv had no time to take care of my hair or myself for the last few months life is hectic as a solo mum working full time and a business to run as well. On Saturday arrived looking rather homeless hair unbrushed and a mess. This was my first visit to this beautiful little hidden gem! I made some time for myself to get a much needed treatment. I opted for Keratin nanoplasty after researching on google about something less toxic than just a keratin treatment Iv been having elsewhere which I found extremely toxic and didn't want to repeat. The Keratin nanoplasty at Marcelo and Co which is the first NZ salon to offer this treatment, isn't toxic and you don't have to leave it in for 3 days without it getting wet like other keratin treatments. Not only is this treatment outstanding in every way, smooth silky manageable straight repaired hair is the result. I was treated with a warm welcome no judgement (I promise my hair was bad) and the most wonderful team of professionals. Tania was an absolute darling enjoyed her company and expertise over the 4 hours I was there, we shared quite a-lot of life stories and many laughs and for this tired muma this was very delightful.Iv definitely found my new salon!!!
