What a superb afternoon. Boarded boat at Portimao, we were four of a total of about a dozen. Set off up the River Arade about 12.30, immediately served a drink (choice of wine, beer or a soft drink). The wildlife along the river was beautiful and the scenery superb. It wasn't long before a lovely lunch was being served. Starters were a choice of a tuna dip and a spicy sausage. This was followed by a good salad followed by piri piri chicken. The desert was orange slices sprinkled with cinnamon. The quality was very good and the portions generous. Drinks were served with the meal. Our host, Carlos, was both informative and funny and it seemed no time at all had passed before we pulled in at Silves for 2 hours to explore this beautiful little town. The steep walk up the castle was well worth the views. If you've not visited here before it's well worth it. All too soon it was back to meet at the boat for the trip back to Portimao. We did a private hire (11 person boat) to take us up to the Arvad winery for tasting and lunch, rather than all the way to Silves. It was a spectacular day from start to finish and enjoyed by all members of the family from my parents to my young neice & nephew (3&5).

Excellent communication from Ricardo beforehand to confirm the details and a friendly warm welcome when we joined his boat. Having grown up in the area he has interesting historical info to share as we made our way up the river. Whilst Silves is a lovely city to wander around and enjoy lunch which we did by road, I would highly recommend a visit to the winery by boat so you can fully enjoy the wine without having to drive.

Due to weather conditions didn’t have time to join the Benagil caves trip but would be top of my list next time.
