The Favorite Vintage — Local services in Barcelona

I recently visited this vintage shop while in Barcelona, drawn to some of the pieces I saw through the window. Unfortunately, my experience was tainted by racial profiling from the owner. She seemed to assume, based solely on my appearance, that I wouldn’t be able to pay for my purchases. When it came time to pay, her card reader "conveniently malfunctioned," and instead of checking if it would work, I was asked to manually input my card number as if it were an online purchase.

What’s particularly troubling is that I’ve shopped all around Barcelona and have never been asked to do this, nor have I experienced such treatment anywhere else. I paid with my own card, and the assumption I couldn’t was hurtful and completely unjustified. When confronted about it she blatantly lied to my face.

If you are a person of color, I would advise spending your money elsewhere, where you can shop without being unfairly judged...

I want to sincerely thank the incredibly sweet owner of this vintage shop. A few days ago, I came in to try on some clothes and accidentally damaged a pair of pants while trying them on. I felt awful and wanted to buy them as a way to apologize, but the owner kindly and firmly refused. She told me not to worry at all and explained that the pants were already going to have a zipper added anyway.

I even offered to pay for the repair costs, but she wouldn’t accept that either 😭 Her kindness, patience, and generosity truly touched me. It’s rare to come across people who handle situations with such grace and understanding.
