I am genuinely perplexed by the attitude of cultural institutions in Geneva towards children. They present an image of being child friendly, particularly in advertising and social media. MAMCO even opened an art playground on site. But taking my quiet, well-behaved child here is unpleasant. As soon as we arrive on the first floor, and my child goes over to take a look at an artwork, a staff member rushes out and scolds him, and tells him to be careful. I ask her - he hasn’t touched anything, he isn’t messing about but is clearly interested in the art, telling me excitedly the colours and shapes he can see. Has he done anything wrong? No, she replies, he has not done anything wrong. So what is the need to make him feel uncomfortable and unwelcome simply for being a child? What is the need for a pre-emptive telling off? MAMCO is not the only one. The experience is the same in most cultural institutions in Geneva. They need a fundamental rethink about their attitude to children, who are the next generation of art and history lovers, and the ones who will keep their...
Read moreWonderful modern and contemporary art museum. Some famous names Marcel Duchamp, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys. And then some very contemporary art from past 10-20 years which was very fun. Younger artists I am not familiar with, some great pieces. Fun spatial pieces where you entered darkened spaces, a faux cave and others. Very fun. Reminds me a little of PS1 in New York where the building is part of the charm of exploring the space as well, interesting stairwells and surprisingly old and claustrophobic elevators. 😊 As well as art in unexpected places for example mirrors in bathroom were warped and an art piece themselves. If you like contemporary art and are in Geneva do not miss. Very cheap too most exhibitions were free and just 5 chf for a small exhibition of young artists....
Read moreMy review is only for the top floor of the museum, as it was the only floor open when I visited. Accordingly, admission was free, which I appreciated. The top floor is dedicated to designs of rooms and buildings, some real and some imaginary. There are models of the buildings as well. There weren’t many explanations, but there was friendly staff around to assist. Note that you will be asked to put your bags in the lockers downstairs, which they’ll...
