Great Massage at Wat Phan Waen — Highly Recommend “Audi”!

One of the temples in Chiang Mai that offers massage services is Wat Phan Waen, and it’s here that I met one of my favorite massage therapists — Audi. He’s highly experienced and has an excellent understanding of body anatomy.

What makes his massage unique is that it’s a customized experience — you can request which areas you want him to focus on, and how much pressure you prefer. But honestly, most of the time, you don’t even need to tell him — he can immediately detect and treat the problem areas!

He also uses a variety of tools to assist in the massage, such as Traditional Thai tok sen (hammer massage) and applying massage balm over your tense muscle.

After the session, he even gives helpful advice on how to take care of your body afterward. Truly an all-in-one experience!

The atmosphere at Wat Phan Waen is also part of the charm. Even without air conditioning, the gentle sound of tok sen tools in the background, fresh air flowing through the clean and well-ventilated space — and most impressively, no mosquitoes — makes it a very relaxing and authentic experience.

I came to Chiang Mai to study massage at this temple with amazing teacher Joe Khumlee. I had found Joe teaching online during Covid lockdowns and came to spend 9 days learning Joe's style of Thai massage techniques, as well as his style of Tok Sen massage. I had already been practicing Thai massage for a few years, and have more and more people coming to me with problem areas of their bodies. Not only did he help me refine my massage techniques - but helped me with ways to approach treating issues and injuries. He speaks great English and can explain a deeper meaning behind why we do the techniques we do - in the places we do them. His style of Tok Sen massage is much softer than the style I learned previously and creates a harmony and vibration in the body so conductive to healing. I stumbled on this temple while on my way to Kalm Village. The evening sun plus the winter filter made the pagoda looks magical. The temple is not big and there’re a lot of cars parking inside, yet it feels so peaceful.
