It was getting late, and my favorite ramen places were too far away, so I decided to explore the area closer to my office. I should have known that Silom-Surawongse area actually rivals Thonglor-Ekamai when it comes to Japanese food.
I picked Sendai Ramen out of a long list of ramen shops mainly due to the average rating and the number of reviews. And I have to say that the shop did not disappoint.
I'm giving 3 stars for now as I don't think I would get out of my way to come back here. But if I'm in the neighborhood and my mind wanders to ramen, I would definitely visit this place.
The bowl I went with was aburi chachu ramen. The aburi chachu is fragrant as expected. The noodle was firm, just like the way I like it, and the soup was good. Overall it was a competent bowl of ramen, but without anything that shouts out that hey, I'm Sendai Ramen!A strong 3-star rating, but not quite 4 yet.
I'm open to try their other dishes and who knows, there may be the 4th star waiting somewhere...

Egg noodles just this side of al-dente, perfectly chewy but nowhere near chalky. The shoyu miso broth was... Shoyu-y and miso-y in even proportion. Sorry, I'm no ramen expert. I just looked for the thumbs up sign and pointed confidently and I was not disappointed. I can tell you it was both light and filling. Tangy, savory, and deeply satisfying.
The restaurant is owned and operated by Suzuki Norio who left a life as a sarariman in Japan to become an actor and chef. The walls of this wood paneled noodle house are covered in autographed photos of Suzuki-san with actors such as the late Michael Clarke Duncan and Game of Thrones actor Michiel Huisman, and inexplicably, cartoons of the actor/chef as a tomato or an octopus.

Read moreIâve been to many Japanese owned restaurants. I lived in Japan for 3 years. Usually the owner is very friendly and welcoming. Not sure whatâs going on here. The owner sat and stared with no emotion. Strange. Awkward. The food was good. Ramen had delicious flavor and texture. Fried squid rings were bland. Big menu with lots of options. Plenty of japanese dishes. Location is easy to find. Seating is limited. We sat down and started looking at menus for 15 minutes and wait staff just stared at us. I wanted a beer. Badly. Why werenât they taking our drink order? Im in a ramen house. I want beer immediately. I wouldâve drank 3 bottles instead of 2. Very strange. The best thing here is the food. The rest of the experience is strange. Proceed...
