Maurice was so much different than other jewelers I spoke to: he didn't try to upsell; he listened to my thoughts, tempered them with thoughtful analysis, and from there advised me on what diamonds were my best options. Trust is also why I went with Maurice over online dealers. In fairness, these online stores can be a little cheaper, but only a little. Here is why I believe paying a bit more to go with Maurice is worth it:
Maurice's reputation is everything. His work has earned hime so many 5 star ratings, here and on google. With every client he takes, he puts his reputation on the line. In light of how much engagement rings cost, I wanted someone who had some skin in the game. And while reputation matters to the online dealers, their reputation is more tied up with cost, while Maurice's is about quality. Additionally, the online dealers' reputations do not go as far back as Maurice's.
Maurice is easy to work with. He met in person with me on two somewhat lengthy occasions and fielded my questions via phone and email. His patience is impressive, as Ascott does a lot of very expensive, high-end work, and while my ring wasn't cheap, it doesn't compare to some of the other sales Maurice lands.
Maurice has the right experience. He's been doing this a long time, and he's good at it. Unlike the online stores, which often function as middle men without a real connection to the diamonds they are selling, Maurice personally inspected the quality of the diamond he sold me. That was important to me because of Maurice's reputation (see 1), because it means that Ascott put its money where its mouth (they actually bought the diamond they sold me and would be stuck with it, if no one wanted it), because pictures don't do a diamond justice (trust me, I've looked at so many diamonds online and in stores and took so many pictures of them), and because diamond certificates (GIA or anyone else) aren't always right.
Ascott offers a lifetime of service. Ascott has been around a long time, so there's good reason to believe it'll be there in the years to come. I'm already benefitting from the service they offer. I was flying blind when I picked out my fiance's ring. As a setting, I picked a classic solitaire. My fiance fell in love with the diamond, but wanted to tweak the setting a bit, and Maurice is giving her the personal attention he gave me when he was trying to land the sale. I couldn't imagine having to tweak a setting online, especially since you don't talk to your jeweler online, and (from what I've seen at least) the online stores don't offer customized settings.

We had visited several other engagement ring stores and were not completely sold before we went to Ascot, but we were we immediately drawn by the warmth and genuineness at Ascot on our first visit. We came back a few weeks later and met with Maurice, who is truly a wonderful person and an expert in the business. He was very kind and friendly but he was also real and open with us. Some of the other places we visited seemed to tell us everything we wanted to hear in order to make a sale, and this is not the case with Maurice. He was very accommodating and committed to our utmost satisfaction, but he was also honest and authentic with us, which we value immensely. We were particularly blown away by the customer service at Ascot when I mentioned that I was interested in seeing a particular diamond, that was currently set in a professional setting, loose. I had zero expectation of being able to actually see this diamond loose, but my partner and I were completely flabbergasted when Maurice removed this diamond from its professional setting right in front of us so we could see the diamond out of its current setting. I am certain that no other place would be this accommodating and simply amazing. Maurice was so helpful in helping us find the perfect diamond for our budget. Ascot has an impressive selection of diamonds, and we were able to find a stunning Asscher cut in our desired carat and budget, even though Asscher cuts are less common. Maurice was also simply wonderful in helping us build a custom band for our diamond. I desired something that other places told me was not possible, but Maurice was able to take images of features of other bands that I liked to incorporate them together to build my dream engagement ring. My partner and I could not have had a better experience at Ascot. Maurice and his wife, Wynonna, are such kind and amazing people who are experts in the business. First of all, it's so nice that they show the active inventory on their website AND pricing - really helps you gauge options within your budget. I filled out the appointment request on the website and received a very quick response from Jenny. I told her our budget, the specifications we were considering (cut, color, clarity, carat etc) and mentioned things I was specifically debating on (two different stone shapes and metal color).
Our first appointment was everything I could hope for. Jenny was so kind and helpful! She walked us through the process and showed us several diamonds within our requested specs - never once did I feel like we were being pushed into making a decision (especially not one outside of our budget). I've heard horror stories from friends where they walk in a store and it feels like the used car salesman experience. Visiting Ascot is intimate and not overwhelming at all. The appointment was so helpful narrowing down decisions. I decided to make a second appointment specifically for metal color; Jenny was SO patient with me and let me sit there for an hour comparing different settings and helping me take pictures to compare when I got home later. She felt like my personal cheerleader! She also listened to my expressed priorities for my dream ring and was able to find the perfect diamond between the two appointments. When I saw it on our second meeting - I immediately lit up and knew it was the one!
I love that they don't try to upsell you! I felt nothing but joy and encouragement in our appointments and email communication. They really made us feel like cherished clients. My ring suits me perfectly and I love that it was easily customized for us. I get compliments all the time on how lovely and unique the setting is (even for a simple solitaire). Sparkles like ice!!!
