I gave this place more than a chance and almost every single time i have been disappointed! my first time going there i went with almost 7 other people, everyone order and when it was time to leave we asked for separate checks....the server said "we should have mentioned that from the beginning and that it's gonna take her some time to do that". The server should be the person asking if it's gonna be together or separate checks not the customer. she brought the checks but some were messed up and when we told her she got all mad and raised her voice saying that we are giving her a hard time when we weren't even being mean or rude, we gave her her time to bring them even after blaming us that we should mentioned it from the beginning.
Second time around i went it was raining i walked in and there were a very few empty seats and i asked if we can sit; she said the seats are reserved and we can sit outside (mind you IT IS RAINING) i told her i can sit till the reservation shows up and she said she can't do that! like what kind of customer courtesy is that!! i had no choice but to leave.
Third time going there was IT for me. this is during Covid-19 and i completely understand "Limited capacity" during this pandemic. First of the place was packed and it was not following the 6 ft social social distancing. me and a friend of mine were seated at the bar (mind you there were 2 other tables that were empty) but they were right next to a table of two so i thought maybe she is trying to keep people away from each other because of the pandemic EVEN THOUGH OTHER TABLES WEREN'T SEATED THAT WAY AT ALL. A guy walked in and she sits him one chair behind my friend and i. later 2 people get up and leave; me and my friend waited for the table to be cleaned and moved over to that table. Now we are as far apart from anyone in the very corner. The owner comes rushing towards us and say "You can't just move from one seat to another without asking and I'm not forced to keep cleaning your seats from here to there during this pandemic" i told her "i moved because we were seated at the bar next to someone that was only one seat away and i wanted to be safe, you are going to clean after anyone no matter what and that's why we even waited for your waitress to clean after people left! Then she processed to say that the table we are sitting on is reserved and that all the tables have a sign saying wait to be seated so people don't move as they please. I told her nicely there are two other tables that are empty additional to the bar where we were sitting so if "THE RESERVATION" shows up they can sit anywhere else it's not like i took the last seat in the damn place! and it's not like this is a huge restaurant where you need to make reservations and sit in the same spot! she started to raise her voice on me saying " I DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN MY RULES FOR YOU AND WHAT DO YOU THINK THIS PLACE IS, WHAT? A LIBRARY? IF RESERVATION COME IMMA HAVE TO KICK PEOPLE OUT" " like what kind of customer service is this!!!!! and how do you even yell at your customers like that with this bad attitude!!! i was so disappointed i literally asked her to get my check and i left and I'M...
Read moreI’m happy to update my previous review after a few recent visits to Astoria Café. They seem to have made meaningful improvements, and it was great to see the team welcoming us warmly—even during busy hours. We were seated promptly in a nice outdoor spot, and overall, the experience felt much more pleasant and attentive than it had been in the past.
What stands out most to me is their positive attitude toward feedback. It’s clear they care about creating a better experience for their guests, and I truly appreciate their effort to listen and improve. I want to be fair in my reviews and not discourage any local business that is genuinely trying—and they are.
Giving them back 4 stars and looking forward to making more good memories here. Keep up the good work!
Disappointing Decline in Service – Once Great, Now Not Worth It
Astoria Café used to be one of our go-to spots, visiting at least once a week with a group of 5 to 10 friends for nearly three years. We loved the cozy atmosphere and its convenient location near many of our friends. Despite occasional challenges with finding tables (even with reservations) and the difficulty of splitting bills, we overlooked these minor inconveniences because the overall experience was enjoyable.
Unfortunately, the service has taken a drastic downturn recently. A particular employee, acting on behalf of the manager, has been incredibly rude—even to long-time regulars. The communication is unpleasant, the wait times have become unbearable, and they frequently make mistakes with orders. They don’t ask about splitting bills at the time of order, causing unnecessary confusion later. Even getting something as simple as a bottle of water or coffee takes forever.
It’s clear that customer service is no longer a priority for them, and after so many frustrating experiences, we’ve decided to stop going altogether. If you value your time and respect for your group, I wouldn’t recommend this place. I sincerely hope they make changes to their staff and management soon, or they risk losing more loyal...
Read moreThey don’t separate smokers from non smokers. I hate cigars especially. If you like second hand smoke, this is the place to go. They are not attentive to their tables. I was told by there employees that the owner takes the majority of their tips.
It’s a nice spot occupied by a bad company. They are overpriced. Ask for a tea and they charge $8 for hot water and a tea bag. Absolutely ridiculous. They won’t allow you to sit down and order food if you have a coffee from somewhere else. Which doesn’t make any sense because they are not only losing a customer permanently, but they are losing business because of a 3 dollar coffee ?
The companies apparent game plan considering they have limited seating…
sit them down -take order -take their money -get them out asap.
If the customer is not continuously purchasing items, give them their check and get them to leave. If it’s a larger group, get the single person to leave or sit them outside (as they did to me as I was drinking my Astoria made cofee)
That’s fine if that’s what there policy is, but they will definitely make it apparent that’s what they are doing and they are rude people (from my experience).
What I like about the cafe…. Only the location and the deserts. The cofee isn’t as good as near by Paradeso or even Java and Hobbs… the food isn’t worth what you are charged.
I have also seen patrons dogs tied to loose chairs and as people walk on the public sidewalks attack the dog walking by. Overall, this place gets a grade -D overall.
P.S I have read the laws regarding “outside drinks”. There is nothing in law that says it’s illegal to have an outside drink (cofee) on their premises. It’s a simply a policy of astorias because they are in competition with surrounding cafes. If that is their policy, so be it, but it’s not law. If they want to talk about laws, I can name one of many laws being broken by this cafe. I HAVE SEEN THEN SERVE ALCOHOLIC drinks without ID’ing. My friend was exactly 21 years old and he was never asked to...
