I am honestly so let down and disgusted by One of a Kind Pet Rescue. I was contacted via email this past weekend stating that my dogs micro chip had been scanned and my dog was located. This email came from the microchip company but was initiated by an employee of One of a Kind Pet Rescue. Let me add this VERY VERY important detail, my dog had been missing for 6 years. So you can imagine me getting this email I was elated, I called the number listed for the “finder” and they told me my dog was not at their location that they told the person who was trying to surrender my dog that they couldn’t take her, that she would have to be taken to the pound. I am not arguing that if that’s the protocol fine I get it. One of a Kind Pet Rescue scanned my dog and found that she had a micro chip (thus the email I got) the problem was they sent the person away with my dog with instructions to take my dog to the pound and they didn’t get a name or phone number. Nothing at all. This specific employee was very sympathetic and sorry (that is the ONLY REASON why I gave 2 stars) he even told me when I called back the next day that he didn’t sleep at all because of how bad he felt. I told him I appreciate that and that I was going to be driving to Ohio, from my home in Indiana, where my dog went missing from (no idea how she got 5.5 hours away) but he assured me that he was confident that the woman who was surrending her would have taken her to the pound. He also said he would be off on Monday and would take my cell phone # home with him so he could call me on Monday and see how things went. I thought this was kind. I started worrying because based on the time I got the email and the time that I saw the pound closed on that same day I knew chances were they were closed if she did take her there. Then they were closed the following day (Sunday). So I woke up at 5 am Monday and hit the road for Akron, Ohio so I could bring my baby home after 6 years. I called the pound as soon as they opened and they said they didn’t have my dog but I was welcome to come and check every cage and look just In case, of course the wind was out of my sails wit that blow but of course that is what I wanted to do. In the meantime when I hadn’t heard from the employee of One of a Kind Pet Rescue so I called there and asked if I they could get a message to him (it was his day off) and she said yes I’ll text him. I mentioned the situation and she said she was aware and that “it happens all the time” and that “it would be impossible for them to take the name and number of every person who brought and animal in” she said “we would have piles and piles of notebooks” I said, “ even when you scan it and a micro chip is there” she then back tracked and was very rude and said she would have him call me. Still no, I’m so sorry this happened to you, we feel terrible, nothing. When I arrived at the pound I was informed that the male employee from One of a Kind Pet Rescue has just been there to see if my dog was there and he didn’t see her. Again he hadn’t called me but I thought well he must be genuinely concerned because he went there on his day off and looked. I still hoped he would call because he was the last person to see my dog and any info I might get would need to come from him. After my search at the pound and finding nothing I went to every other place that she might be. Shelters, vets rescues everywhere. I felt so defeated so I called back to One of a Ki d Pest Rescue and got the same rude employee from earlier that now informed me that she wasn’t going to bother her coworker on his day of when he wasn’t on the clock. I told her I felt like she was Trying not to help me and that she was not very nice she said why would I try to not help you? After a few more seconds she said hold on and another woman took the phone and said hello I am taking the call and laughed. I responded with, I don’t find any of this humorous” she said I wasn’t laughing at you I could just tell my coworker was getting frustrated so I’m taking the call, in the Executive...
Read moreUntil recently, I've had very high opinions of OOAK. My parents used their low cost spay/neuter clinic multiple times--once we brought in a stray cat, and it turned out she was already fixed, so OOAK didn't charge us a cent despite having already sedated and shaved her. My in-laws have adopted puppies and kittens from them, all of which were healthy. I debated even posting this, because I know leaving less-than-stellar reviews on a rescue can mean less animals find homes. That said, I had a poor experience in regards to my pup's medical care, and after reading other reviews, I can see this is a pattern... As such I felt it important to share.
I had a wonderful experience in person at One Of A Kind. Cheyenne was kind and helpful when I adopted my eight-month-old Mini American Shepherd in April. She told me he was fearful, likely from being a puppy mill rescue or possibly abused in a previous home. I was introduced to him and allowed to walk him around the yard, and I instantly knew he was my soul pup. I came inside and said I wanted to go through with the adoption, and was informed that his adoption fee was $500. I was surprised, but OOAK reassured me that the fee included full vaccination, rabies, heartworm, deworming, microchip, etc. etc. so I went through with it. Upon getting him home he had diarrhea for several days (despite feeding him the same food the rescue uses), and when I called they said "he's just stressed from the new environment" and told me to give it time.
A couple weeks go by and my pup is very sick with some kind of stomach issue. Diarrhea worsens and becomes bloody. The vet X-rays and fecal tests him, and tells me he has one of the worst cases of Giardia she has ever seen. She says he had likely received no dewormer/not been fecal tested at the rescue in order for it to get this bad. It is now almost July, and we are still dealing with this sickness. He has not been around any other dogs for an extended amount of time, and does not go to the dog park--this is likely something he's had since being in OOAK's care. At this point the vet fears he may have permanent intestinal damage from the severity of his giardia; she is having me put him on a rather expensive probiotic food, in tandem with the multiple rounds of metronidazole and panacur we've done. This ordeal has cost me over a thousand dollars at this point, and more importantly, my pup is in pain.
What's more, my vet takes a closer look at my pup's vaccination records and discovers he was not boosted for DHPP and no note was made for a booster follow-up with a vet. I had to completely start over his DHPP since more than 4 weeks had gone by since his first shot. They also did not give him Lepto or Lyme.
Lastly, I realized the other day that OOAK gave me a copy of my pup's rabies paperwork without giving me his rabies tag. The original record had his tag taped to it when it was scanned--they seem to have kept the original with his tag on it and gave me the copy. I have called about this issue in hopes that we could work out a way to get his tag to me, but no one answers the phone. I live an hour and a half away and work full time, and usually OOAK is closed by the time I get off work, so I can't go in-person to have this taken care of.
Long story short, I love my sweet pup. He is wonderful, and we're in reactivity training to build his confidence. He's learning to swim, beginning to walk off-leash in the neighborhood, and growing more comfortable around my cats every day. He's my bestie and I'm so grateful that OOAK allowed me to bring him into my life. But for $500, I should've been able to trust that the pup I was bringing home was healthy. I can't help but feel that If OOAK had paid closer attention when he was in their care, my boy may not have ever gotten so severely sick. I'm happy to have him, but will be recommending friends and family to...
Read moreI wish there was an option to click negative stars.. I adopted a dog on Friday September 14th. I was told he hasnt eaten in two days because hes depressed. which turned out to be a lie..one of many lies to come. Had to take him back on the 16th, he wasnt eating, he was puking and had diarrhea really bad.. I was told to bring him to their clinic and sign my rights over so they could take him to get treated. I called them Monday and Tuesday and no one had any information on the dog. Wednesday rolls around and after they said he tested negative for parvo, they tested him again and he was positive and wasnt doing well at all. Thursday, same thing. Friday i get a call and they suggest that i put him to sleep. I get a call less than an hour later saying that for the first time in a week that he is eating and drinking and doing better. On Saturday they call me saying I could pick him up on sunday and he would be shedding parvo for about two weeks, so we picked him up Sunday and brought him home. His leg was swollen and he lost a significant amount of weight. They gave us four pills to give to him twice a day, and said to call and get more when they were gone. When we called to get more we were told he had a couple when he was at the hospital and he should be good. So we decide it would be best to take him to our personal vet at this point. When going over the paper work we received from one of a kind we realized that there was a lot of missing information and what was on the papers didn't match everything they told us. We went back to one of a kind to try to get more of the paper work from his hospital visit and the employees were rude, argumentative, and didnt want to offer any help or support. They blamed us for the issues he had before we adopted him that they failed to inform us about before we brought him into the clinic. At this time we've only had the dog in our home for three days since we adopted him on the 14th. We took the bills and the test results our vet gave us to one of a kind and they did not match anything that the clinic diagnosed him with. We asked for reimbursement and the only thing they said was you can give us the dog and we can give you your money back. They said there was no guarantee on the animals health, and one of the employees said its a good possibility that almost every dog in the facility is sick and has problems. The entire time he was in the clinic they said just return him, but we already had an attachment to the dog and we cared about him and wanted to make sure he was okay. During the process they were sending us pictures of another dog and trying to convince us to trade our dog in for another one. It seems to me that theyre out there just trying to make a quick buck pretty much flipping dogs like theyre cars, like it doesnt matter to these people that the animals have lives, feelings, and emotions. I would stay as far away from this place as possible, they dont care about the animals, all they care about is money. Overall the employees and the facility as a whole is...
