I went to the Mandalyn Academy a few weeks ago for an ombre look. My appointment was at 10:15 am. I CLEARLY stated to the instructor and the student how I wanted my hair. I even had several pictures to demonstrate the color and style. I let the instructor know that I DID NOT want my hair to be orange. I thought that the instructor would just let the student know to just put a few foils in my hair. Instead the instructor told the student to completely strip my entire color. I sat under a sink for over an hour with this bleach on my hair. It was burning the crap out of my scalp. Then after that the student and instructor starting adding more bleach and color to my hair. I saw the color and I let the instructor know it looked too orange. She said it just looked that way. That my hair would look more like a chocolate brown on the towards the top. When the student washed and dried my hair, my hair literally looked like a pumpkin. My hair was melting all over the place! I started to cry to see my hair this way. The student got all nervous and I could see this frantic look on her face. Another instructor came and tried to help her out, but at that point it seemed hopeless. Then the Co-owner (tall skinny blond lady) came and let me know that this was NOT the students or the instructors fault. She was so rude and passive aggressive. She tried to tell me that I went there for the cheap prices. I let her know that she was completely wrong about that. That I went there because I looked up the Google Reviews that Mandalyn Academy had. It was 4:45 pm! Remember my appointment was at 10:15 am. I was there for 7 hours!!!!! When I went to pay, I was charged $80. The Co-owner even charged me for the product that they used to try to fix my hair. Unbelievable!!!! How tacky is that! The Co-owner wanted to talk to me after I paid so I went in to her tiny office and again she tried to tell me how I made her student feel bad. And how it wasn't their fault. I told her "you've got to be kidding me, my hair is melting'!! To you Co-owner, you are the most tackiest, most unprofessional owner. You need to take class that can teach how to treat clients or better yet people skills!!. It makes me sick that there are still people like you. An apology would have been appropriate coming from you. I would never think about treating one of my clients the way you did that day.So tacky and unprofessional! I truly feel sorry for you. And the reason why I am posted this is because I would never want another women to go thru what I did that day. Luckily a wonderful stylist that attended Paul Mitchell's Academy fixed my hair! Clearly she could see that Mandalyn Academy did not know what they...
Read moreI've had my fair share of experiences with Beauty schools students. I've gone to several in the Utah county area and for the most part walk out just being thankful my hair isn't falling out. I figure if i'm very blunt, demanding and exact in what i want from a student than the job ultimately can get done. In going to Mandalyn Academy i was taking a chance as i had not heard as much about it or experiences. I checked a few reviews online and made and appointment. I've had alot of issues losing my hair from stress and recent medication, i was worried about what could be left for my hair. And hair, Is a woman's glory, her pride. The student that did my hair with was SO understanding and sensitive towards those insecurities. Enough that i felt confident enough in her ability to take a bit more control that i'd offered in the past with other hair academy. She took my hair from a very light strawberry blonde to a bright cooper red to blonde ombre. So a VERY drastic change. Her attention to detail, procedure and the clients needs were impeccable. She was fun to talk to and kept me in the loop at all time during my nervous moments. She had an answer to all my questions and keeping me involved and encouraged me on how everything was going to turn out superb. During the process time in the color she noticed my very blonde eyebrows and mentioned i might want to darken them since i was going to such a bold dark color. I've never had my eyebrows done before but she did a wonderful job. I'm glad her awareness and attention to the overall look i was trying to achieve left me looking my very best and confident. Once she got my hair done an processed i couldn't believe how well she blended the colors naturally (which is very hard to do for an ombre). Her eye for detail and passion for hair was very clear. This school encourages students to take a passion or talent and give them the skills to execute it with confidence. The Fact that as a hair stylist she looked more at my hair, face, features as not just another job/appointment, But as a unique person. She felt my anxiety and was so hospitable in her kindness and positive reinforcement. She made great honest decisions on what would fit my personality and ultimately left me walking out excited over my new look. Not to mention that as a first time client, i got a even better discount than anticipated. This school has got some smart cookies in it and the instructors are supportive and orderly. With any of my questions or little nervousness i was quickly reassured. I'm definitely going back and would recommend this academy cough cough (Melinda) in the future....
Read moreI'm a little biased, being married to a Master Esthetician business owner who is also an Instructor here at Mandalyn Academy's esthetics program. However, I have not found anything negative to say about this school. I really feel as though the students are receiving a top notch education here, and I personally have received many spa services here and I have never regret for a moment paying a premium and tipping well over other schools/spas in the area.
For those of you who are considering getting a service at the school, but are hesitant about having a student work on you, a few words of advice: for both hair cut/color and skin care/waxing, ask for a Creative student, or someone who feels as though they are confident in a "specific specialty". If ever you are unsure, please request an instructor to help address your concerns, your professional student loves this if ever you are in doubt!
From what I have observed, I can appreciate all the constant hands on experience and instructor check in's during any of the treatments I am receiving. The students are very professional, fun, and caring. They appreciate every client that comes in.
The instructors are also very wonderful. All of them are well educated and each of them are very successful business women, with the majority of them currently owing their own spa! You can really see and feel that they are there to help the students become successful. With my wife being an Instructor at Mandalyn Academy, she can assure you that students do receive as much hands on and one on one time with an assigned instructor to assure proper procedures.
Again, I have received an array of services performed on me including body and facial waxing, hair cuts, facials, chemical peels, pedicures, back facials (which are amazing by the way if you haven't experienced one yet) and more. I am never disappointed by the quality of these professional students.
For those who are considering a career in cosmetology, esthetics, permanent cosmetics, check out Mandalyn Academy! The Learning Leaders and Staff (especially my wife Gia=)) are so welcoming, and they definitely work hard to maintain a nurturing yet challenging and learning environment.
I look forward monthly to all the treatments I will be receiving again! Mandalyn...
