12/17/15: I am updating my review based on the ridiculous response the owner posted. I am livid about such a condescending response to legitimate customer complaints. When multiple customers are making the SAME complaints about your way of doing business, the problem is not the CUSTOMER.
First off, I am an officer at a financial institution - as such: We put the customer first above everything we do - you should TRY this! We know it is ILLEGAL and UNETHICAL to post our customer's confidential account information to a public forum - BECAUSE THAT IS HOW FRAUD AND THEFT HAPPENS - not customers complaining! (But since you felt it appropriate to publish what should be confidential account information, I have to correct your false claims - you may have MADE me $600 in the past year by selling my items, but you haven't PAID me $600 - AND THEREIN LIES MY COMPLAINT!!) I have a Master's degree in Finance - I do not need you to provide me with your googled definition of "theft" nor do I need schooled on all the fraud that goes on in the world or talked to in such a condescending manner. I do not appreciate you insinuating that my upset feelings from your bait and switch business practices stem from being me being short on cash and "needing money in a pinch." First time EVER I've been insulted on a public forum by a STORE OWNER responding to legitimate customer complaints.
"The only thing we have changed is the way you go about getting large sums of money." -- $100 may be a large sum of money to you, but not to me or a lot of other consignors - your new policy is ridiculous and has already lost you a ton of business (more to come as I share this "pleasant" experience with everyone I know). This policy change was not in the consignor's best interest as you state - I am the consignor. The time and effort it takes to get my account paid out is NOT WORTH MY TIME!
WARNING TO ANKENY MOMS: You're far better off selling your items through Ankeny FB pages, Craigslist, or eBay. Items will sell for more and in much less time (a few days compared to 4-5 months). And YOU actually get paid for YOUR items instead of a heartless corporation taking 60% and then making you walk through fire and jump hoops for your measly 40%. You're also far better off donating your items to charity and taking the tax reduction - OWNER OF ME N MOMMY TO BE - let me know if you need me to explain how that works for you.
(And you don't have to deal with the teenagers behind the counter that give you conflicting info every time you try to collect payment and a store owner who belittles their customers). Win/win/win.
Original post: This is by far the worst consignment shop I have of ever done business with. I have been trying to get a check for months from them, after multiple trips and multiple phone calls with promises of checks being available by the end of the week, it took another in person visit for them to tell me that they no longer do checks at the Ankeny location and that I have to send a written request through the US mail to their corporate location which took about six weeks for me to get the lousy hundred dollars back. Not worth the time or headache! You will be far better off donating your items to Charity and taking the tax deduction rather than deal with this lousy business. I have no idea how it could possibly be legal for them to change the entire terms of consignor agreements after already taking hundreds if not thousands of dollars of my items. Seems like...
Read moreI agree with the previous reviews. First, the items in the store are not discounted very much for used items. I shop sales at Carter's and find the exact same prices for new clothes as the store offers for used clothes. Second: I came in with a bedding set and was told they don't sell bedding so I put it back in the car and brought in my bin of clothes to sell. While we were waiting for my clothes to be looked through my husband pointed out to me a bedding set that was for sale on the shelf at the store? Third: After hearing how the different payment options worked I figured I'd see my money sooner if I had them sort through the clothes and pay me that day. They told me to wait 15 minutes and someone would look through my bin. I had my husband and 2 year old with me and we waited over 40 minutes for my clothes to be looked through! ONE bin of clothes! All the clothes were Carter's brand and in like-new condition. They finally came out and said they were only able to take 6 items from my bin because they do not accept Target or Wal-Mart brands. This confused me as none of my clothes were from Target or Wal-Mart. She then added that they considered Carter's a Target brand. I was so frustrated that it took 40 minutes to see that all I had was Carter's. I was also frustrated no one told me that policy ahead of time! I was so mad I took my bin and left with my measly $10 for the items they kept (which by the way were Carters!). On my way out I also saw some Carter's pajamas! It seems the store doesn't follow the same policy for every customer. Later that same day I posted that same bin of clothes to Ankeny Swap and made...
Read moreI've been in multiple times in the last few months with totes of clothes to try to consign and they barely take any of it. Some of the items have been new with tags and all of it in decent condition. Their reasoning being that it's stained or older than 3 years old. Which is not true! Also when I've gone in to shop they very seldom have what I'm looking for. Jeans, cotton sleepers, holiday dresses. And when I've tried to get pay out on my account it's not easy to get. Recently when I asked for a whopping $3 payout I was told they were on a month long payout freeze! I'm very disappointed with the consignment shop lately.
Edited- I posted this review 2 years ago. I went in about 4-6 months ago to consign some items and was first told ur had been more than 18 months since I had brought items in so I was no longer a registered consignor with them. When I explained that that wasn't possible because my youngest child was just 18 months old and I had brought items in after she was born without problem. I was then told that I was removed from being a consignor because of leaving this 2 star review 2 years ago. I asked to have the store owner call me to try to get to the bottom of the issue. When I recieved the phone call the owner told me that since I was unhappy with the way they worked they thought it was best I not consign with them anymore. Needless to say my opinion of this shop has gone from they needed to make improvements to they have pretty bad business practices and ethics. Unless my kids really need something and I can't find it anywhere else I probably won't...
