I would just like to say, I understand that small businesses can't constantly afford returns and exchanges without a receipt like department stores. But, there is an exception to every rule. It is about making the customer happy to the best of your ability. It is also about treating the customer with respect no matter how upset the customer is. I have been in retail for many years and the company I currently work for believes in providing the best customer service possible. I do believe that is why their business is so lucrative. After having a disappointing experience with the product with the gift that was purchased, she probably didn't want to try another pair of earrings. You could have made an exception, especially after she spent awhile in your store the day before thinking she was going to be able to exchange them for clothing. It shouldn't matter if it's clothing or jewelry she was exchanging it for. She was going to give you more business in her exchange and could have very well brought you repeat business and other customers such as myself into your store. One bad review can go a lot further than a good review. And when you called her, it was a call of intimidation. I assume that is why she apologized. I know the associate she initially worked with was very nice and good to her and did what she could. But, she did lead her to believe that she was able to exchange them before she did her shopping and for that you should have made the exception. And, in the future your associate would know how to deal with the situation and it would be a learning experience. And, you knew the product came from your store so what is the big deal? You lost more than you would have gained in this situation. That is how you, as a business owner, should weigh the situation.
