Today I had to go to Hoffman Heights for a couple of things. It was really hot and dry with very little wind, so by the time I got there I really needed to sit down to catch my breath. I had walked, and it's a good mile from my house. If you've ever been there, you know that there are no benches in the shade, only the metal ones in the sun for the bus stop. So I sat on the only place I knew was going to be in the shade, a couple of ledges outside this spot that previously had been vacant. It's not anymore, but I still needed that short 5 minutes to catch my breath. About a minute after I do so, this guy pokes his head out and basically tells me to scram. I tried to explain that I just needed to catch my breath and I would leave. His response was to say he was calling security. Seriously? Could he be any more rude?? I knew the signs were there, but where else was I supposed to sit? On the skin melting benches in the sun? After getting my breath, I went about my business. The two places I needed to go to were wonderful experiences as always, which is why I gave the two stars. One for each good experience. If Hoffman Heights is going to take away the only place to sit, they should just remove the ledges completely. I grew up in this area between a lot come & Go. The shopping center feels like it felt back in 2001 to me. There are several good highlights like China Chef and Ace Hardware who have been going strong for the community and then there are tragedies like Check Into Cash and the dollar store along with Save-A-Lot which have pushed down some of the value in the neighborhood. Low income has been stagnant and you can now find people often walking around begging for money while you're trying to enjoy your shopping experience. It's as if I'm of time stand still in this area. The place holds a special place in my heart but I feel like I could have gone further now on the phone then and see what seems like to be an absence of progression in the area.
