Texas Media Systems — Local services in Austin

Despite being on the periphery of the film and TV industry here in Austin for the past few years, I had never been to Texas Media Systems. After shooting with a Canon C100 on a recent project, I decided I had to own one, and I didn't want to wait for B&H to ship me one. So I paid them a visit.

The staff was really great. They were helpful and knowledgeable without being snarky a-holes (which is a problem with at a lot of camera/gear businesses). They have a really good selection of products and they know their stuff. They also were nice enough to inform me that I shouldn't be paying taxes on gear in Texas and helped me get the right paperwork on file.

At the end of the transaction, it was great to be able to carry the camera out and not wait for it to arrive via UPS. Plus, this seems like a great local business and I'd rather spend my money here. I'll definitely be back for...

I normal buy all my heavy video gear at B&H Photo in NYC but I decided to look into buying from Texas Media Systems because I am an Austinite and they had a good reputation for sound advice. I purchased about $2K for an Atomos Shogun and a $500 Sony FS5 software HFR upgrade at the suggestion of Joe in sales. I later found out that since I wasn't recording into the camera I wouldn't need this software upgrade. Joe said buying this software is like "buying a hamburger" so there would be no refund. I wasn't expecting a full refund anyway and understand that purchasing software is slightly different. I later left a message with Jessica-President to explain the situation and she never returned my call. I am very impressed with their customer service. I needed a camera and a lens that was out of stock at the larger stores that I normally purchase from. I checked at their website and noticed it was in stock and gave them cal to verify. They told me they were out of stock as well. Leroy took my name and number and called me back the next day and said that they had one left. That made my day! I’m used to bigger companies not calling me back and I expected the same here but I was wrong. I received a couple more emails from Leroy about my purchase along with tracking number and 2 days later I have my new camera and lens.
