Sophia Boutique — Local services in Avon

I struggle to write this review but I believe it is important for others to read this before working with Sophia Boutique. This can be disturbing to those with self confidence challenges, weight challenges, eating disorders or simply just Brides that are plus size like myself.

It was recommended to me to go to Sophia's for a bridesmaid dress hem so I did and it was a great experience. Both Nina and Gigi were so kind. As I was getting married a few months away, I asked if I could bring my wedding dress (I had purchased from other store) to Sophia's to get it hemmed. Of course, they said yes.

A family member of mine joined me for my first fitting. She also needed a dress for the wedding. While we were there she tried on a dress and fell in love with it. They did not have it in her size and had to order it so after taking measurements, they agreed on a size and the order was placed. Many months later the dress arrived and did not fit. My family member was devastated and concerned. While at our appointment the ladies of Sophia suggested to her to try a diet pill so she could fit in the dress...they promised to text her the pill that they use to lose weight when they need to do so. My family member and I left and got in the car and rightful so she was devastated. She was being told she had to lose weight for a dress that was clearly sized incorrectly. The thought of a diet pill being mentioned as a way to fix their mistake is appalling. My family member checked all her doctors notes from the past 4 months and realized she had not gained any weight or changed in her measurements so the "change" in size simply was not true.

The reason this review is not 1 star is because the ladies of Sophia Boutique were able to order a larger size dress for my family member and it came in within weeks, was sized and ended up working out.

However, this review still remains 2 stars because of my wedding dress. Leaving the Boutique I was confident in my dress. Note, I had to leave my dress with Sophia's as they had already started alterations at the time of the chaos with my family member. I had gone a few times before my wedding and again, felt confident in the work that was done to the dress. Fast forward to my wedding day, I quickly realized what I thought was so wonderful was not. There were missing buttons on my sleeves and back. Multiple buttons had come off over the course of the first hour wearing the dress and the lace in the back was not even with the rest of my dress.

So what now? I write this review to say all that glitters is not gold. The Boutique and the individuals that run the boutique were clearly overwhelmed during this process.Between the poor craftsmanship on my wedding dress, the fiasco of my family members dress, consistently not knowing when my appointment was (we had showed up multiple times to their surprise, even though an appointment was schedule) I am disappointed I chose to work with Sophia's in the first place. This is not a plus size friendly boutique and certainly not recommended for anyone who wants to put trust in someone to care for their gown,...

I truly wish I could write a more positive review on Sophia Boutique. Unfortunately, the owners overpromised and did not deliver. When selecting my gown, the owners both advertised the ability to add lace to the bottom of the gown - saying that they would source the lace and stitch it on. That was the only reason I said yes to that gown - because of the vision that Mina had provided on what the gown could look like.

Between March and September, they did not source the lace, requiring me to source it myself. Additionally, they were not communicative or responsive throughout the process.

Based on these issues, I informed Mina I was obtaining a new seamstress and wanted to pick up my gown - she advised she had not done the alterations, and that it would be ready for pickup. When I picked it up, she had completed alterations with haste so they were not done nearly to the degree of proficiency that they should have been - if I wasn't planning to take the dress, she would have had to completely redu them. She also wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount of money for completing alterations - that I did not ask her to do.

The shop does have gorgeous dresses at a fair price, but it's not worth the stress that comes with an unreliable seamstress, or the lack of communication...

Gigi and Mina at Sophia’s Boutique are more than amazing, they are fantastic! They are wonderful, genuine, and kindhearted people with exceptional talent for what they do. They spent so much time with me to find the dress of my dreams. Unfortunately due to COVID we had to order a dress 2 sizes too big for me because overseas shipping was a risk. Mina worked so hard to make sure the dress fit me perfectly including over 3 dress fittings prior to my wedding day to make alterations to this dress. With all the ups and downs of planning my wedding during 2020, my dress fittings with Gigi and Mina were always a highlight. We had so much fun during those fittings. They made me feel gorgeous and helped me remember all of the exciting things to come with the wedding. They gave me energy to keep planning during this difficult year. I cannot thank them enough for that. I am beyond happy with how my dress came out. Gigi and Mina treat their clients like family. You will be in great hands with them. I would recommend them for any bride looking for a dress and vendors...
