Went to see "Incitement" during the Israeli Film Festival last month, but the movie could not be played. To battle piracy, theaters partner with other companies (in India in this case) to activate the start of the film. It has to be coordinated. This was not coordinated, and the ball was dropped. Management stuck a make-shift comedian (employee) in front of the audience, who made crass jokes and racially-insensitive remarks about Indians, to "entertain" everyone while a solution was comprised. In the end, they played "Love In Suspenders", but it wasn't our cup of tea so we left. Our tickets were forcefully forfeited. Management told everyone in the theater that night that the refund process would be initiated through e-mail within a couple days. It has been a month now, and there is yet to be any e-mail in my inbox. This Laemmle doesn't even have a contact number available. Looks like I'll be trekking there on foot to fight for my money back on services not rendered. It's not much, but the principle accounts for something. I also say "trek" because parking is painstakingly sparse, and they direct you to the tennis court parking lot a 10-minute walk away. Poor management of the aftermath atop the already...
Read moreI went to the Fine Arts Theatre last night to watch “The Time Machine” with my boyfriend and best friend. I have never seen a manager speak to their subordinate so harshly in front of customers before this experience, and I suspected her behavior may have had racial undertones.
When my friend bought a bottle of water and asked for a cup of ice for me, a male staff member was very kind and offered us a choice between a small water cup or a larger soda cup, which was thoughtful.
However, a female staff member (who I later found out was the manager) came over and spoke to him harshly, insisting we should be charged for the soda cup, even though it was just ice. We offered to pay, but she changed her mind and said it was fine.
I felt bad that such a kind staff member was treated so harshly by his manager over something so minor. While I understand the need for policies, I couldn’t help but feel there was a racial undertone, as I was the only East Asian person there that night.
I didn’t catch her name, but she appeared to be in her 20s, had curly hair, darker skin, and seemed to be of mixed race, possibly half Black and half White. I don’t think she should be working as a...
Read moreWe had rented out the Ahrya for a private screening and I have to say, it was the most pleasant experience. The managers there were kind and communicative, and answered all my persistent questions. They really worked with us to ensure that our screening went according to plan, and even when there were bumps in the road on my end, they took them in stride and really did their best to help me make things work. They also made all of our guests feel really special and taken care of, and were really great at attending to our needs the night of the screening. If you're looking for a place to host your screening, look no further than the Ahrya - you won't find a more beautiful theater, or kinder employees. Also, they have killer concession food and a really great movie program, and I'm definitely going there on my own to catch some of the great movies...
