Kwee-Jack Fish Co. — Local services in Billings

The first couple of years the salmon we received was excellent. We just tossed the last four packages (5-6 lbs). I do not know what was done differently with the packaging. The last time we had salmon was last August (within a year of picking it up). We just can't get past that experience. We thought it was a fluke, the fishy smell and sour taste (we couldn't eat it). We decided to try again tonight as the salmon was stamped with an expiration date of July 2023 and thought that the August filet was an anomaly.

For reference, I picked up three 20 lb salmon shares (1 for my husband and I, 1 for my daughter and 1 for my next door neighbor). I drove the 15-20 minutes home with it in a cooler, and placed it directly in the freezer. It never had a chance to thaw until the days we took them out for that night's dinner.

What is unfortunate, my daughter and her family had bought their first share and their "FIRST" filet was fishy smelling. I had a hard time believing it. I'm not sure if she ever wrote a review or had another meal from their share. I am so sorry I referred her.

This is a situation where there is no "instant gratification" .... but the wait is sooooooo worth it! After placing my order in April, I picked up my salmon yesterday (Sept. 23). I received a notification (via email) 3 weeks before delivery was to happen with complete directions about the pickup. I even received a text message the day of the delivery reminding me to pick up my salmon (where and when). When I arrived to pick it up, the people were so friendly and helpful. I received a cedar plank for cooking on the grill with some recipes and a lovely thank you note from Noah Locke (and family) for my order. That's not even the BEST part.....the salmon was to die for! I used the cedar plank that night on my grill following the instructions they gave me on how to use it. It truly was the VERY BEST salmon I'd ever had and my husband agreed. We support the mission of this company and try to buy from small businesses, especially family run ones, when we can. Despite a rave review from a neighbor, we have been fairly disappointed with the cuts of fish we received and generally insulted by the customer service. We ordered 20 lbs of frozen salmon and almost half of our order was tail pieces. The tail pieces are definitely lower quality than the center cut pieces. At $25/lb (more than double our local supermarket), we did not expect such variation with the fish. The online descriptions are vague - Joe told us this is on purpose. If we would have known the fillets were going to be this way, we would not have ordered. He also let us know it was our fault for placing too big of an order.

Separately, a decent number of the vacuum sealed bags had punctures in them on arrival so some were freezer burnt.
