Texas Roadhouse: A Cozy Restaurant

Tonight, we had a nostalgic dinner at a restaurant from my childhood. We used to live in Moncton, New Brunswick, and would sometimes drive down to Bangor, Maine for a quick trip in the summer. The only decent restaurant we found was the flashy Texas Roadhouse. We would soon find that this is a popular chain across all of the United States. Their forte is hand-cut steaks, but also apparently have award-winning ribs. Back in the day, they let us actually choose our cut of steak. Tonight, weren’t able to do that. Our server did bring us their fresh, warm bread with their miraculous cinnamon butter (I always eat too many, leaving little room for the steak. I ate five tonight). My steak of choice was a 12 oz. ribeye. It was well-marbled and tender, and sautéed mushrooms and onions made it even better. The two sides my steak came with were mashed potatoes and buttered corn. The server offered butter on the mashed and I took it. The corn was sweeter than Ontario’s. My beverage was a nonalcoholic, blue lemonade called the Blue Crush. It was okay. My mom got their strawberry Fruity Margarita. It had celery salt and an orange slice on the rim. She said, “it was strong but good.” Here at the Roadhouse, it’s always a party. The music is loud, they celebrate your birthday, and the servers even get up to do a line dance every hour. Inside, every square-foot has an ornament, a potted cactus, or lit up sign. You can also find a bar with a TV in the center of the space. The cost was $95 USD. I’ve been to this restaurant chain about a dozen times, and tonight was just as nostalgic as the last time.

So my visit was a mixed bag... I'll start with the good. The rolls and butter (cinnamon?) were amazing. Very VERY good. Friendly staff, bit of a wait, but who doesn't like throwing free peanut shells on the ground? It can be a little noisy, but it's a roadhouse... that's to be expected. After numerous birthday YeeHaws, my daughter wanted to come back on her birthday. Her food was good, chicken was tender and not dry at all. My ribs and steak? Not so much. The ribs were dry and lacked flavor. The steak is where it hit the fan though. When a place advertises their steaks and has a display of fresh beef as you walk in, you'd think a medium rare sirloin would be a walk in the park. They HAMMERED it, like bad (see the pictures). I asked a staff member to find my waitress which took much longer than it should've. To her credit, she apologized and said she'd make a new one. After a bit we just wanted to leave. I flagged her back down and said we just wanted the check. She said she'd have the manager discount the meal and left to get the check. The manager came over and asked if I was sure, that she'd get the steak done ASAP. I told her it'd already been long enough and everyone else was done eating. She said she'd discount the meal as a way to make it better and I thanked her. I expected to leave happy as they were removing the food from the bill. They did not. She took $6.50 off of the $26 dollar meal. I don't expect something for nothing, but I don't want to pay for garbage either. Decent place and getting 3 stars because some of the food was OK and some of the staff were friendly.

There is a girl at the front named Ava who was very defensive, abrupt and cut me off several times as I was trying to just peaceful relay a message about our visit. We were a party of 12, I was told when got added to the wait list that they would have to split up our party and we would have two servers but they would keep us as close as they could. Estimated wait was 45-50 minutes. Okay, great all of that was good. We waited 75 minutes to be seated. Annoying but again okay. They brought us to our seats and a little upset to find they did a table of 8 and a table of 4 across the isle and diagonal from one another. We had passed 3 open- 6 tops that were back-to-back on our way to where we were sat. Making our party very divided. I wanted to just stop by the front on our way out to very politely say that this was disappointing as we saw better options. Ava was who I had talked with, she is who made this experience worth a review. I started to tell Ava, “ Hey we were the party of 12 and were sat at two ta.” Didn’t let me finish trying to convey my message. Defensively cut me off saying, “I know you were told you would have to sit at two different tables.”- Ava “Yep, I was. That’s not what I’m trying to say though.” “I can get you a manager.” Ava “Nope, that’s not necessary. I just wanted to try say that the tables-“ Cut off again. “I can get you a manger.”-Ava I just wanted to relay a simple message. It didn’t need to be a whole thing. This whole conversation was short because she had an attitude and kept cutting me off. My message- “Future wise, tables back-to-back if available would be nicer as opposed to across the isle and adjacent to each other.” There were lots of disappointing things during this but the waiter can’t help the kitchen gave him a 1/2 frozen hot dog to bring us. Not his fault. Small things. Not review worthy and things happen. All good, I don’t sweat small things. Ava cutting me off very defensively and bold in her delivery was the unsettling part of this experience. If I came at her angry and yelling then her reaction would have been warranted. I didn’t though. I came up quietly waited to be able to talk quickly with someone, and move on. Sometimes people don’t need to make a complaint, just want say a quick comment about something not being ideal. No reason for the...

At 7:36pm on December 31st, I called Texas Roadhouse. To inform them that half of my food was absent from my bag. It wasn't until I got to work that I realized it. When I spoke with the waiter over the phone she reassured me that she would place a note on the register to let them know about the missing food and that they would converstate me for a free meal next time I come in. I informed her that I would be coming tomorrow and she approved. At 6:00pm on January 1, 2024, I made an order and came back to pick it up. As I entered, I handed my card to the gentleman. As Im trying to explained the situation from yesterday, before he swipes my card. He's completely ignoring what I'm saying and began swiping my card anyway. He never bothered to look at the note with my name and number that was placed RIGHT in front of him. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the same number I ordered my food with yesterday! Once he finally listened to me about the incident that taken place. He utters a statement to me and says, 'I wish you had informed me before I swiped your card.' As if he had given me his attention to inform him. Following that, his manager arrives after he has brought him over. The manager initially appeared to be likable, but he turned out to be very sarcastic. He asks me, 'What can we do for you', as if he hadn't been informed of what was missing the day before. He held the note in his hand, which specified precisely what needed to be accomplished. What is the reason for asking me what I want? It appeared to me that he was trying to irritate, demean, and insult me throughout the entire conversation. I won't come back to this restaurant ever again. I feel like he was also being prejudiced towards me! After 10 minutes of talking, he finally agreed to give me my food on the house! I felt as if people of colored aren’t truly welcome at this restaurant, from the disgusting stares till the lack of customers service! Please save yourself the headache and uncomfortable experience! Especially, if you are colored, I would not suggest this place. My hope is that this reaches the appropriate...

Fabulous dinner experience!

We called in advance to be put on the wait list. A definite must. When we arrived, there was a line outside and very crowded inside. I anticipated the worst evening imaginable and seriously thought of turning around to go elsewhere.

After being politely greeted and escorted to the hostess stand, our party of seven waited less than three minutes before being notified that our table was ready🙂

Every table in this cavernous environment was occupied by diners who all seemed to be having a delightful evening. The atmosphere depicted a large party 'where everybody knows your name.'👍🏻

The signature country music was loud but not overwhelming and the popular line dancing by the wait staff seemed to keep the whole house in a pleasant mood without destroying our expectations of a relaxing dining experience.

We initially feared that what seemed like organized chaos was going to ruin our evening. Within one minute of being seated, we were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by our smiling waitress. This obviously wasn't her first rodeo as she gave us the impression that we were her only guests. However, it quickly became apparent that she was an awesome hostess who served several other guests...but not too many!

All of us were very pleased with the quality our our food and how it was prepared.

My sirloin steak was a perfect medium-rare. The baked potato was not over- or under-cooked. The steamed broccoli was tender but not overcooked and had a delicious seasoning added to it.

Bottom line: We were well cared for. Teamwork was obvious. We received our food quickly. Quality of food was excellent. We felt relaxed at our table. All staff seemed to enjoy themselves. All guests were enjoying their evening. We heard several compliments from other tables about the food and staff. We observed the line that greeted us was never-ending but it was 'turning over' quickly throughtout the evening. FABULOUS WAITRESS.

Our entire party highly recommends the Billings Texas...
