I moved to BL in September of 18 and needed a new local guitar shop to buy strings at and have an escape. I went in to the store and was underwhelmed by the guitar selection (as if we buy guitars daily...) until I realized, this is a store for established musicians. Rentals, repairs, supplies, lessons. THIS is what I needed. Not another GC that still doesn't have what I need.
Matt is the owner and he runs the store with his brother-from-another-mother, Steven. They are both super kind guys that are deeply knowledgable about their instruments, craft, and music. Whether you're soft spoken and reserved or loud and obnoxious like me, they will make you feel comfortable when you're in the store.
I've been playing guitar for 13 years and while I'm competent as a player, I am not where I want to be. I started taking lessons with Matt (also the owner) on a whim to give myself weekly structure again. A few months later, I'm getting over a decade-long plateau in one part of my knowledge base. Something my previous and more expensive teachers were unable to do. (I took a week at Berklee and it did more for my creativity than my actual mechanics). Matt is a FANTASTIC teacher. Honestly stop reading my review and go ask him for a lesson. Not only has he rejuvenated my playing but I feel I've made a lifelong friend. If I moved out of BL, I would still come here to see Matt, have a lesson, and pick up the things I need. Matt is also a fantastic luthier and does all the setups on my guitars with a fast turnaround time if you ask for it. If there is something Matt can order that you can't get in another store as well, Matt generally beats the free shipping times from GC and Sweetwater so unless you're millennial-level-impatient (I'm born in 91, I'm allowed to say that) he's a one-stop shop. He even referred me to someone who winds custom pickups!
Needless to say, don't let the lack of 9 million poorly made Gibson Les Paul's on the wall distract you from the fact this is the best music store in Pierce County.
P.S. Check out the Teton's that he carries. They're made in Idaho and...
Read moreOk. This post is long overdue! Steve from B Natural Music is the nicest most flexible guy ever and he is so incredibly knowledgeable about so many different kinds of instruments and their maintenance!
Here’s my experience, my son told me he didn’t want to play any instruments in school this year. Within three days the band teacher CALLS ME and asks about my sons status on band and whether or not I’d allow him to participate. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I was a bit embarrassed that I was caught so off guard but the band teacher was absolutely wonderful and patient with me and all my newly formed questions! Within two days, I found a barely used trumpet on OfferUp and purchased it only to learn some parts were missing that weren’t listed in the original post. Ted Brown looked the trumpet over and said that it was in good condition but that it would take at least THREE WEEKS before they could get the trumpet back to me cleaned and repaired. This wouldn’t work because my sons first day of lessons was a day and a half away. I take the trumpet back to my car and starts cowering the internet’s for parts and music stores that might help me.
I called B Natural Music in a slight panic and Steve answered the phone. I told Steve about the trumpet, it’s missing parts, and the amount of time TedBrown quoted me for getting the trumpet cleaned and repaired. (Oh! I should also mention that the parts and cleaning TedBrown required for the trumpet was upwards of $300.) Steve kinda chuckled and told me to bring the trumpet in and he would have it done THE NEXT DAY! However, Steve had it completely repaired and cleaned that same evening I dropped it off! AND!!! Steve only charged me, I think, $10! Yes, you read that correct, $10! I wish I would have known about B Natural Music before I had purchased the trumpet on OfferUp because Steve restores instruments and rents/sells them back to the public at real decent prices! I will never take my sons trumpet or any brass instrument anywhere other than B Natural Music! THANK...
