Let's just say I'm a total Noob when it comes to car sound systems. Maybe even less than a Noob. I have a new truck. The first real new truck I've ever had. It came with an anemic sound system and I've been spoiled by premium factory systems in all my wife's new cars I buy her. I've been waffling about even going in somewhere but yesterday I went into Car Toys in Burlington. I imagined high pressure tactics from the outset because there is something smarmy surrounding the auto industry and it's satellite aftermarket enterprises. I did not get that vibe exactly but I was kind of at the hands of the salesman who happened to be the store manager Chris. We chatted about what I was looking for and he made suggestions and threw some techy lingo at me before he took me into the sound booth to demo various systems. I was looking for better speakers, a subwoofer of some kind and amps to drive the speakers. My only deal breaker was I did not want to buy a new control screen. The factory one basically runs all the features in the cab and does everything an aftermarket one does. Chris said they could make that happen. With my mind at ease he demo'd different speakers and subs using different music. Like I said the techy stuff is lost on me but hearing is believing. With Chris' help we landed on six speakers to replace the factory stuff. The sub was a little trickier. There were some floor leveling fold outs in the rear of the truck cab used with seats up. There is a subwoofer box made specifically for Ram trucks. Only thing is I had to give up the floor fold outs. It wasn't my favorite option but the alternative was a shoebox size box with one 8" sub I would have to move if someone sat back there. I mulled it over and decided to get the "Ram box" under the seats. Yes I know this is long but hey it's a new year so gimme a break. Chris worked up a price and we set it up for the next day. When I dropped the truck off I had one more change. After meeting Ben (installer) I asked about adding a second amp to drive the four door speakers. More techy lingo between Chris and Ben and I had my request accommodated. Ben installed everything in about 7-8 hours. He took me through the system, showed me the controls. Set the subwoofer power output accordingly and answered my questions. I went back in and finalized some paperwork and was on my way with a very good system. It was not cheap and I don't even know if it's above or below average for what I had done. I do know they can work within any budget. Give them a try for your car...
Read moreI had a Kenwood multimedia system with Android Auto and backup camera installed. There are a few issues so I need to bring it back to Car Toys. The camera installed was a snap fit so the seal wasn't tight so I wish they had of put a little epoxy to create a seal currently water can enter in side the door panel easily. Also after installing the camera with integrated license plate light the other license plate light is not working now. Also the GPS antenna is not installed per Kenwood's instructions in the manual. Supposed to be placed on the dash closest possible to the front windshield on top of metal plate so satellite can transmit signal easily to this without any electrical noise not sure where antenna is installed but suspect in the dash where there is a lot of electrical noise and metal potentially blocking it. Want it relocated per Kenwood's instructions, function is more important to me than aesthetics hiding it away somewhere. Also wasn't pleased to find out that the extension cable with connectors was cut short because too long. I didn't want cable to be cut not necessary could have been looped and tucked away in the rear door there was a lot of room or under the dash. Too late to fix that without pulling out all the hidden cable and replacing the cut cable. If the GPS antenna and non-working license plate light are fixed in the end, will be a satisfied customer. Will update this post after speaking with management. UPDATE: Management contacted me and said they would like me to bring the van in and will address anything that I'm not satisfied with. The GPS antenna was moved to the top of the dash, centered close to the front windshield as per Kenwood's instructions. This is not typically what they do, usually it is hidden away inside the dash, most people prefer this, but I prefer what is recommended by the manufacturer so they were totally happy to move it. Ben explained to me that the extension cable was cut because the connector was too large to fit through the flexible conduit boot between the van body and rear door. Makes sense so really he had no other choice. Overall, the experience was good. Great service is Paramount and they delivered! Will need to upgrade my other vehicle media system in about a year and definitely will be returning to Car Toys for...
Read moreNormally I let things go because mistakes just happen. I had a terrible experience here. I paid a ridiculous amount of money for speakers and a stereo to be installed for my birthday. But, they say they are competitive there.. let that one go but then there were problems with the controls on my steering wheel so I called to tell them. They were nice about having me bring my car back in to have the problems corrected. They had my car at least 5 hours, never got a phone call even though they had a contact number. I called when I was off work to ask if it was done. I was told the car was in the parking lot that it was done. When I asked why nobody called they asked if I gave them a number because usually they call but that he didnât know. I pick up my car and as Iâm leaving, the speed warning starts going off every time I go over 25mph. I go back to the store and tell them a warning keeps going off now and can they fix it. They donât know what Iâm talking about, I was told by a few of their staff itâs a Volkswagen thing, but they will plug in a code reader to see. The guy that plugs it in tells me âitâs not showing a code so I canât fix something that isnât there, you know what I mean?â And Iâm now insulted further because itâs a Volkswagen thing that isnât there..I told them it was not a code, itâs a security feature. I told him to forget it I would have autozone do it since they know how to and I left. I looked it up online and after driving 15 minutes with the warning going off constantly to fix the problem myself. I called them to tell them if they donât know about Volkswagens to not work on them and the person tells me he looked it up after I left! My car is 2 years old, They should know how to resolve these issues or at least try to figure out what they screwed up and not be rude about it. I should have reviewed this place before thinking of going there. The only responses I see are that the owner is disappointed a lot when thereâs a negative review. That isnât exactly believable when it...
