I've not been to this particular rock shop yet; however, it is common for store proprietors to offer tips to their rockhounding customers.
Remember: every single rock in a personal collection, in that store, in all rock shops, and in every museum in the world was once picked up or dug from the ground. Quite the moral quandary, I know.
An ethical rockhound researches the area they plan to visit. They avoid private property, national parks, federal land, and any other protected areas. They leave no garbage and disturb no wildlife. Personally, I try to pick up a piece of trash for every rock I collect.
