Iâm typically not the type to leave bad reviews but as a yogi student searching for a yoga community, I feel itâs necessary to speak out on my experience. Iâve visited black swan one other time prior to this past experience and had an amazing time. This time however, Iâm extremely disappointed. I signed up for the 9 pm slow flow class expecting a rejuvenating session but instead was met with a hamstring injury. The instructors sequence was not good at all, it was heavily Americanized and lacked traditional depth and philosophy of yoga. In addition, many of the poses she instructed was not beginner friendly and she lacked the skills needed to provide mortifications for those who are new. I am a 200 hour teacher currently studying for a 300 hour certification, therefore many of the mistakes wouldn't be picked up on by beginners. However, I did bring a friend who was trying to be in tune with the flow of the class and unfortunately she injured herself pretty bad and had to call in from work because sheâs not able to walk. The instructor had us doing splits saying that it was targeting the calf muscles and hammies⌠splits are not a yogic sutra let alone a pose that should be recommended in a mixed class unless thereâs close monitoring, something she was not doing. Yoga is not about stretching, yoga is not about aesthetics, and it isnât about flexibility. This practice is ancient and should be handled with care, this particular instructor completely mishandled this practice and unfortunately it tarnished my outlook on Black Swan as a whole. Whoever is responsible for educating the instructors, please take the time to go over anatomy and yoga philosophy with your teachers again, because your teachings are lacking lineage and complete...
Read moreBlack Swan is great! Iâve trained there for over a year and a half and canât imagine practicing Yoga anywhere else. From the inviting studio space, to the wide array of classes scheduled throughout the day, Black Swan makes practicing Yoga enjoyable and convenient. But the best part of Black Swan are the teachers. Alyssa, in particular, is superb. Highly technical with detailed and descriptive cues, following her through poses and postures feels simple and effortless. In addition to her clear and precise instruction, she also offers insights into the purpose of poses (whyâs and not just howâs) and alternative variations for those who, like myself, lack the flexibility and strength to achieve a posesâ fullest expression. Alyssaâs flows are smooth and fluid with graceful transitions which seem to hit all my troubled muscle groups - a quality greatly appreciated by someone who suffers from chronic back and shoulder pain. Off the mats, Alyssa is warm and welcoming and a pleasure to be around. Give one of her classes a try. Her Sunday night slow flow is my favorite. You wonât be...
