Auction house doesn’t value privacy. I requested the opportunity to bid in an upcoming auction, they refused approval unless I furnished invoices with dates, hammer prices and other information about my purchases at previous auction houses which are usually considered private at reputable auction houses. I furnished these without the identifying details and Matthew ignored my request and did not approve. Beware of any auction house that doesn’t trust their potential customers and requests identifying details about your purchases. The lot I wanted to bid on was very low value and did not require any additional financial information (typical at reputable houses for 10k+ purchases). If anything changes I will update this review.
Update 1: Please note the auction house has quoted below the first correspondence to which invoices were supplied from a much higher caliber auction house (which the auction house has now deleted and changed their response, hence my updated review). To be completely transparent, if things go well this item will close between $300-400. To ask for references, financials and past auction detailed invoices (plus leave the response below) is not normal at this level of bidding. Privacy is my concern regarding my personal purchases, of course letting others know to beware of atypical business practices is not something I consider “private.”
Final update: The lot sold for $225 which is abnormally low for this artist. The last time this piece was auctioned it sold for 1000 Euros at Christie’s. The “due diligence for their consigners” certainly hurt their seller in this case. As a known artist the seller would have made more if they sold this piece of art on Ebay. I’ve worked with lots of professional auction houses with no problems, this is the first auction house I’ve encountered that continually bullies someone for a negative google review even after the auction is closed. Based on my experience I’d avoid this auction house as a...
Read moreI cannot say enough positive things about my recent experience with J Garrett Auctioneers in Dallas. Because they are a family-owned and operated business, I was very impressed with the depth of the experience of the whole family over many years in the business. They really helped address our unique needs with their personal attention to our situation in selecting the best auction-able items from a large family antique/fine heirlooms and art collection and estate. Finally, their efficiency in handling all details surrounding deliveries to them all the way through the well-planned and executed auctions and concluding follow- up was just excellent. I especially want to commend Julie Garrett VanDolen and her father, Jeff Garrett (and his wife, Vicki) for their professional, service-oriented, fairly-priced, and incredibly personable handling of all our auction needs from start to finish. I recommend J Garrett Auctioneers unconditionally and without...
Read moreNo one will answer a phone. Impossible to get approved to bid. Find another auction house.
Would have loved to have spoken with someone but that was never an option. And no, you don’t have a long list of “swear laced” responses. You have one that was the result of being given the runaround after the auction was over. Happy to post it all here if you would like. I have applied to other auctions of yours in the past yet still have never been “verified”. This isn’t the first time nor from other responses here am I alone in having this difficulty. Your system of “verifying” bidders is not clear. I had no idea I had to go through some vetting process. As a result, your consigner lost out on a higher bid that I had...
