Although we have lived in this area for almost 17 years, we just "discovered" Our Town Cinemas Cafe & Taphouse in Davidson when we Googled places that were showing the movie "Lion." Because I had no idea how large the theaters would be or how many folks would be viewing "Lion" on this holiday, I bought our tickets on-line to guarantee a seat and had to pay a $3 service charge. I will not do so again because we arrived there well before any other patrons and were actually the first ones in theater 1. The staff was friendly and professional. We arrived early so we could order our lunch for consumption during the movie. In addition to normal theater junk food, Our Town Cinemas Cafe & Taphouse also offers a wide range of snacks such as pizzas from the nearby Brickhouse Tavern and a variety of appetizers and dinner baskets prepared next door at The Egg Restaurant. Our ordered a pepperoni pizza, a large popcorn, and two diet Cokes. We took our seats in the theater, and a member of the staff delivered the hot, fresh pizza to our table. The popcorn was freshly popped and better than in most other theaters. The pizza was also tasty. Our Town Cinemas Café has four small theaters. The seating is comfortable, well-cushioned swivel office chairs with a small table between every two chairs. The setting is intimate but not crowded. Noise was not a problem. The other patrons were well-behaved. The ads prior to the movies were of local business and quite interesting. Our Town Cinemas Café will be our first choice for theaters...
Read moreI love having a theater in our town of Davidson! We sadly don’t go to the movies like we used to.
I brought my mother in law to see the new Downton Abbey, yesterday. We had an issue with the size of the bags they provide when you wish to split up a large popcorn. The choices were just too small. I didn’t want to eat my popcorn and with that same hand going to my mouth (give her more popcorn) when I could split it into another larger container from the get-go. We (by the way) don’t do refills. It’s just too much to eat. I felt so uncomfortable with the way it was handled that I called and spoke with the manager (this morning). I realize that they at the concession stand are just doing their jobs but for me, it wasn’t a nice experience. They didn’t come up with a solution until I pressed it.
The manager did assure me that they are being trained to handle that better the next time. He was very nice about it and I felt that he understood my point.
About the theater: it’s a nice, clean and cozy place. I did point out to the manager that I wish they would reconsider some new seating to replace the office style rolling chair. They just seem Dangerous, like they could flip. I worried about my nearly 80 year old mother in law, toppling. The manager did say they are looking at other options.
The previews looked interesting. I think I may bring my mother in law back for another show. She seemed very interested in the preview of the movie about Elvis.
Take a chance, I think you will like this small,...
Read moreFor visitors I would certainly give this place five stars but as a former employee I can only, honestly, give it four stars. I worked here for almost two years averaging about 35 hours a week. I only made minimum wage ($7.25) and was only given one .25 cent raise after a year. I love this theater, it is my absolute favorite and I will always prefer it. But today I came in to see a movie (my last day was about three weeks ago so I can no longer get the employee benefits and I am aware of that. I paid. In full for everything.) The owner called twice, in the span of ten minutes, about me and my boyfriend (also a former employee) being there to make sure that we paid for everything. I somewhat understand his concern but the second call is what really irritated me. I received a promo popcorn through my csd card like any other human with one can get. He had the audacity to assume we were given the popcorn. After we have been the most reliable workers and have both given our time (almost two years of it) to this company. I am beyond infuriated. This is extremely uncalled for. It is odd enough that he spends so much time watching his employers through a camera and calling for things like one employee eating a French fry on Christmas night. But to treat me as a thief. I cannot express my disappointment and...
