UPDATE Instead of offering any kind of customer service, attempting to contact me, discuss this matter or even look into the possibility that they MIGHT be wrong, they are now threatening me with an unfounded lawsuit. They have spent more time responding to my reviews than they did my initial email. This to me, shows exactly how they treat clients and take care of business. Had they been a client of mine, I would have told them that this is a bad look and they should have made at least an ATTEMPT to resolve the issue rather than slugging it out on social media.
I hired this firm back in December of 2021 for a tax issue I was having. There was an initial issue after I paid them, as I had sent them (as requested) personal information and my tax returns that went "missing". They never found them and I had to send them again, of which I had my husband hand deliver.
They asked me to send subsequent information, which I did. I even sat on the phone and discussed it with their Admin.
I received "statements" from them but no other communication from them other than that. No emails, phone calls, no standard mail.
I admittedly did not keep on top of it as I should have, but in our initial meeting, the accountant Mr. Hagan told me that the IRS was extremely backed up, and this was reiterated to me by the media. I run my own company and have 3 children, one of them is special needs, and home full time, so I am needless to say, very busy. I take full responsibility for the fact that I did not check in with them but believed that if there was an issue, they would have contacted me.
Today, it came to mind and I sent an email to inquire as to my case's status. I was shocked when I received the following response: Jennifer,
After multiple attempts to get the required deduction information from you with no result, Mr. Hagan reluctantly had to close out this case.
He applied the initial prepayment outlined below toward the work that was already done and then wrote off all the remaining time that he had in the case that was over what you had originally paid.
We hope you understand that we can not keep a case open when we can not get the required information from a taxpayer to properly prepare and file a return.
There were no requests for any additional information other than the one that I responded to and called and went over with their admin as stated above. There is no communication other than what was stated as I keep all emails, phone records, texts, and communication for EXACTLY this reason.
What "work" was done?
If they did not have any information as they claim, then what "time" or "work" was invested?? How can you do any work if you have nothing as they claim?
If they "closed" out my case, why did they not return the documents they had received? Why was their no "final" statement sent via mail or email? Their claims are clearly not true and they are attempting to shift the blame for their mishandling of my case.
I have only 2 statements that they ever sent me, one from April 2022 and June 2022 - both state that I had paid $500 but there is no deduction for any work done. The June statement is the last communication I had from them.
So not only is personal and private information of mine "lost", but they are now claiming work that they did not do and trying to shift blame and taking money for services they never did. That is extremely dishonest and shows a lack of integrity.
I DO NOT recommend Hagan, Johnson, and Associates for business or personal taxes and I will be filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau, The State Attorney General, and the Georgia State Board of...
Read moreI’ve had my share of nightmarish incidents from CPA firms that razzle-dazzle you with billboards, commercials, and postcards. All avenues of advertising only to repeatedly receive a penalty and interest letters from the IRS from $1500 to $7800 because the CPA didn’t enter my correct county or some other trivial infraction. This same firm would receive my tax docs on time and then charge me to file three extensions per year until I learned to submit my own for free. They also billed $700-$800 for a return that was consistently grossing $350-$550 per year, so I learned to file online for $25, and that angered them. When I decided to leave, they kept that same negative momentum. After tax season, I received a bill for work never done. The founding member told me that if I ever wanted to sue anyone in Douglas county, I would need to get a “white” lawyer because any judge in that county wouldn’t even acknowledge me because I was “colored.”
Under the umbrella of another CPA firm, I had gotten audited. The partner was EA (an enrolled agent) and charged a flat fee for representation. The very next tax season, I was told that my refund would be close to thirty thousand dollars. When I questioned the accuracy of the amount because I didn’t receive refunds and reminded him that I was nervous because they had made a “math error” the previous year, which resulted in my having to pay just above ten thousand. He said that I didn’t have to worry because his EA partner wouldn’t hesitate to rep me again. I paid this firm for their services but didn’t allow them to file my taxes. I hired someone else, and I wasn’t due a refund, as I had expected. After quarterly installments, I still owed nearly $40,000/FED. That same firm had my whole business in their hands and made one big mess. They did my payroll taxes, taxes (business and personal), updated my QuickBooks file each month, and the AR/AP for my vendors. Soon the letters began rolling in from the IRS.
Each quarterly payroll was wrong. The IRS agent said that the percentage used to calculate payments weren’t even old (like ever used); they were just wrong like they just “guessed” a number. The AR/AP vendors said the firm I hired couldn’t even do reconciliation. Everything hit the fan at once, and I had to start over and learn a few things. The IRS was sympathetic as we spoke. He knocked off the penalty for the first quarter, but on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, I had to pay out of my pocket. I learned to do my payroll worksheets, which were submitted successfully before hiring Paychex.
I don’t want questionable CPA work or something that “might” not get flagged. It’s not worth the headache or the exorbitant fees one would have to pay. After having chitchat with my bank branch manager about these issues, she recommended another large firm she trusted. I called, but they wanted me for the following year. And then I found Hagen, Johnson & Associates. The whole staff is patient, kind, trustworthy, and most noteworthy—honest! They’ve done an EXCELLENT job with my business and personal taxes, and I have no complaints. Rodney knows his stuff and is surrounded by strong, smart women!! I would recommend this firm to large and small business owners and individual taxpayers....
Read moreThe IRS placed liens against my husband and I for not submitting our returns. The balance the IRS had for taxes, penalties and interest were astronomical fees. We tried to get it resolved with the first CPA who had filed our past due returns and got us current but could not get them to negotiate the total they wanted us to pay for penalties and interest. We tried with Taxpayer Advocate Service and they were also unsuccessful. Then we went with a tax attorney, Jeffrey Gartzman of Gartzman Tax Law. We spent more on his fees that would have taken care of our balance the IRS demanded we owed. We had an appointment scheduled to discuss an Offer in Compromise with the IRS. He and his staff showed up very late, the IRS agent came out to call us into the meeting three different times and they were not there. We had never met any of them, only spoke on the phone with his employees and after that meeting, (actually, DURING that meeting), we realized he could not represent us, he didn't know any of our circumstances so how could he understand them! It was disastrous. The agent was as disgusted with his representation and she closed the meeting by saying we needed to get together with him again to try to figure out what we needed and how to present it. I called his office later and the receptionist took my call. I explained to her the things they did not address, and what he did address was wrong and that ALL of the subjects were mishandled, including their arrival time. She said, "well, you know - traffic." Yes, we did know traffic and that's why we were there on time. We received a great deal of advertising from businesses offering their service to resolve our case and I kept all of them. After failing with the other firms, my husband and I looked over each of them and we decided Ms. Johnson's firm looked the best. And they WERE THE VERY BEST! She got it settled for $2600. The IRS had our balance at $32,500 and state was $9159. We didn't have to pay the state any money at all. What a great job they did. Her staff is the best. Knowledgeable and courteous, excellent presentation from all of them. I highly...
