Cabela's — Local services in Dundee Township

The store is saving itself from a 2 star review because it is very clean and well-ish laid out. I work for another, more camp specific retailer so I like to come in here from time to time to see what this store offers in case I need to send my customers here (we don’t have a hunting or fishing section and are by default more high end so if people need a cheaper option and the products offered make sense, well send them here). It’s Friday of Memorial weekend, doors just opened and traffic is light, but the only employee who seems interested in helping me is the person at the door trying to sell me a credit card. I’ve stood in a few department now, feet away from employees who are more interested in say, organizing the shoe wall opposed to checking in on me (two employees doing the task, one shuffling the wall, one watching. The shoes are in a warehouse, customers need the employees to get said shoes… it wasn’t until I had started grabbing shoes from the same wall panel they were working on before they asked if I needed anything.

The gentleman at the knife case, while pleasant and cordial, was working on boxes for several minutes before seeing if I needed one. Roaming employees walking in pairs, specifically a couple of slightly taller young men moved past me carrying casual conversation as I squared my shoulders at them and and leaned forward in a clear “can I ask you a question” stance. I’ll give them a slight benefit of a doubt that somehow they didn’t see a very obvious me, because the alternative is they saw me and DECIDED not to help.

No employee was occupied by customer interaction, not were there piles of visible work to be done (I can understand a focused employee taking care of a wreck left by a customer, unsightly messes do take away from the store experience for many).

I’d like to make a note that the first employee to actively greet me was in the camp section, they were pushing a cart in the way to likely some kind of task, as I was sitting in this chair writing a review. They had somewhere to be but they were still aware of their surroundings yet made sure to acknowledge.. that’s a good one, Cabela’s.. keep that one around.

Customers actively seeking out help is something that needs to happen when things get busy, but this place is light right now. This is just poor retail at a store meant to be an experience. I can’t imagine the teeth people are going to need to pull when the holiday weekend crowd gets here in a few hours.

Are you hunter? Gatherer? Fisher? Archer? Kayaker? Backpaker? Anything Elserer? Chances are they're going to have what you're looking for, and more than likely in stock. There are other outdoor lifestyle chains out there, but none that measure up to the outdoor/wilderness environment that Cabela's has. From its rustic, natural(ish) décor to the outdoor displays to wildlife exhibits, you really do get that "I feel like I'm out in the woods" vibe.

While I've always been a fan of Cabela's, this summer we found that they carry my absolute favorite line of bird seed. I'm a birder and feed 6 to 8 different types of feed in my back year nearly year round, and the fact that they have my favorite brand (Harvest brand bird feeds), but A) in multiple varieties and 2) IN STOCK immediately made this my go-to place when I need bird seed. We used to have to visit 3 or more retail outlets to find what I needed, but not any more.

This has got to be one of the largest Cabela's in existence. Seriously. I've been to a number of them but this one just seems ENORMOUS. It's also got an absolutely beautiful 'front door' that can be seen from the expressway nearby. As I wandered around trying to find my bird seed (it literally took me over 10 minutes) I passed a number of staff members helping others and stocking shelves.

OH...and an aquarium. There's a freakin' AQUARIUM in this Cabela's. As if the animals and all the outdoor displays aren't enough, they add...
