great server for such a large party of 14 people. however, they did not accept credit cards because their system was down. following this, my large party was told to leave the restaurant tonight in the middle of a large storm. we had five children with us under the age of 4. the kids were being kids. they were somewhat loud and wanted to watch the rain storm. they went and stood in a booth across the way to look out the window. with no warning, the bartender/possible manager came up to us and asked us if we paid our bill. we said yes and then she said “so are you going to leave soon?” and rudely said that our children had been so disruptive that people had left the restaurant/ received multiple complaints. she contributed to insult us by saying our kids were all over the place, that we were not handling the children appropriately, and that we were not allowed to be here anymore. we were all very confused as no one has told us that we needed to quiet down or not let the children move around within our little area. were not near other tables. there were maybe ten customers in the restaurant. we had a whole side of a restaurant to ourselves. the children were not bothering any customers standing in a few booths to look out windows, and a baby who can’t even talk who screams every once in awhile. we understand kids can be loud but this situation was handled very inappropriately. you do not kick a large party out, who had given you pretty much all your restaurant sales for the night, without any warning. the bartender then continued to talk portly about us to customers as we were leaving. make sure your managers are professional and speak kindly to paying customers. supposedly kid friendly, but don’t go if you have children. we will not...
Read moreI would like to start off by saying the food was great and so was our waitress. We were there for a small get together for a birthday. There was 14 of us including 5 kids, 4 and under. To begin with we were inconvenienced as their card reader wasn’t working so we all had to drive to an ATM down the road to pull out money. The restaurant was dead, no more than 10 other people there besides us. Obviously the kids were kids and they wined and played a little. Nothing over the top, I would know as I’ve worked in a restaurant for over 2 years recently as I was going through college. Towards the end of our meal it began thunder-storming really bad so we decided to hang out a little longer. Water even started leaking through the roof so we notified them. At this time the kids went over to the Booth next too us and watched the rain, there was no one else in our section at all btw. The bartender then came over and was very rude to us and told us to leave. Claiming that we were loud and disruptive because of the kids and she’s had customers leave (afternoon finishing their meal) because of it. This is supposedly a family friendly place as they even have kids menus too. Now as I mentioned earlier, I have worked in a restaurant before and we always favored our large parties as they brought in big money and good tips. So I was pretty floored by this, The rudeness and disrespect showed was insane to me. Not only were we kind and polite to our waitress but we all tipped pretty decent and it was only 7:45 pm. I know we would never go back because of this. I just hope our waitress finds a better place to work at. So in the end, we had to leave with kids in an...
Read moreCame in for a late lunch in the "dead hours" (~4:30pm), and was very pleasantly surprised.
THE RESTROOMS I've worked in the restaurant/nightclub industry, and there is a common element in all venues. A clean restroom almost always means a clean kitchen, and a dirty restroom suggests a similarly dirty kitchen. The first thing I do when visiting a new restaurant is check out the bathrooms. If they are nasty, i am off to a new location. These bathrooms were clean and well maintained, a good sign of everything in the back house.
THE FOOD I had the pot roast and French onion soup, and both were noteworthy. Portions were large, food was prompt and delicious. I will definetly try it again, but several other items looked interesting on the menu.
THE SERVICE My server, Laura, was top notch. She looked to be running 6-8 tables by herself, and was providing exceptional service to them all, which is no small feat. I rarely find service of this quality in non-fune dining restaurants, and I hope the venue treats gems like Laura well.
THE DRINKS I wasn't drinking, but their beer selection was robust and they had a VERY nice bourbon selection.
THE VENUE Huge color images of Michigan are everywhere in this restaurant, and each table has their own lighthouse image. Fun fact, Michigan has more waterfront property & lighthouses than any other US State.
THE VERDICT A gem off 23 in Dundee, I recommend giving Great Lakes Eatery a try. By the time I was checking out (~5:30 pm), the number of customers in the restaurant had already tripled. This is a great sign of a successful restaurant, and they totally deserve...
