I randomly decided to Google these guys - a store with this name was my goto place for audio (all analogue back in those days) in the late 70s/early 80s. Lo and behold, it's the same logo and I even recognize the aquamarine shelf motif. I vaguely remember the store being first called "Student Discount Center" and located off of Thayer Street on the 2nd floor somewhere. They then changed their name and moved down the street. My Dad used to special order stuff from these guys too.
I used to get my cassettes, portable stereo items, phono carts etc from these guys. I remember getting Audio-Technica yellow-belly carts LOL. Sony ES, Maxell (UD)XL tapes etc. This was all pre-digital. By the time the digital revolution came about, I was already half way across the country.
The names I remember were John (owner), Curtiss, and Kelly. Lots of time spent there - and also browsing the record stores in the same general area. I haven't been back to RI in years, but for sure, I'll stop by. Lots of happy memories back then - and it's good to see the tradition is still...
Read moreAwesome store with very knowledgeable staff. I was in a hurry and they were able to get me a really nice vintage reciever to replace my fried one that couldn't be fixed. If I wasn't in a rush I could've spent well over an hour looking at gear and chatting, such good stuff they have well priced. I'll be back to look through there stash. If you need vintage stereo equipment this is the place and they service them too! I picked up a very nice Nikko NR-715, it sounds so good and pure power! My vinyl has never sounded better!! Thank you Stereo Discount! Update, went back a few times because I can't help myself and walked out with an amazing pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 set and for an amazing price. Stu is the man, Thanks Stu for the...
Read moreA great place for vintage audio fans. All kinds of gear at various levels of greatness in the audio world. Can't speak to the repairs but just walking around all the names you've read about and never really played with is, by itself, worth the visit. Great staff too.
UPDATE 2021 - After around 5 years of trading, repairing, buying and interacting with the shop, Stereo Discount now gets 6 STARS. Others commenting on the dynamic duo of Stu and Scott are absolutely spot on ... an outstanding combination. Scott is more than technically excellent - he actually cares about and likes what he takes in to repair. And Stu - a walking encyclopedia, humanist rather than capitalist, a pleasure to visit and discuss and learn...
