Extra Space Storage — Local services in East Rutherford

Facility is relatively new/clean and staff are very friendly. Extra Space Storage overall, however, engages in some shady business practices. Be warned, there will be a signifigant unannounced rate increase after your first three months. The initial agreement did not make this obvious to your average renter. I would have rented elsewhere if I knew this was the case. My rate went from $204.59 per month to $303.97 per month without announcement or warning. I have no doubt the contract was indicative of this fact, but also have no doubt Extra Space took great lengths to hide it. When I inquired about this the staff was kind, but unsympathetic.

**Update: After parsing through the contract and talking with corporate, be wary of the very last line, Section 42: "As part of your agreement to rent, you may have received an initial rental discount. Your monthly rental charge is $141.00 as compared to the suggested rental rate of $224.00 for your storage unit." This was the first I've seen of any rate other than $141. They of course raised my rate beyond the $224 but that is neither here nor there. Also be aware that Extra Space can make the change simply by providing 30 days notice. For Extra Space, a good faith effort to notify the customer that their rate is going to increase by over 30% is to send one sole letter via first-class mail. Once they've sent the letter, if you continue to use the space, you've legally consented to the rate change. Given that I never received the notice I have put in a request for a one-time credit for the rate increase. I'm still going to rent here, but make sure you know what you're doing before you sign on the dotted line--Extra Space seems to think engaging in behavior similar to the predatory loaning practices of the banks in 2008 is...

I’m extremely disappointed with my experience at this storage facility. I understand I was late by a few days past the 30-day mark, but the increase in cost is outrageous. A 10x10 unit that was originally $275 jumped to $760 — in just 36 days. That’s nearly $500 in added fees, and I’ve never even been late before.

I spoke with the store manager, Jovan, who was completely unhelpful. No attempt to work with me, no solutions, just a shrug and a “there’s nothing I can do.” It’s clear that this place is more interested in profiting off of people’s tough moments than actually helping customers.

I’m paying the fee so I can remove my belongings, but I will never use this place again and will warn everyone I know to stay far away. Jovan assured me that once I pay, I won’t owe anything further — and I expect that to be honored.

Storage customers, be warned: this place is a scam disguised as a business. Do your research and go somewhere else where they actually treat people with decency.

Follow-Up to Previous Review:

I appreciate the owner’s representative replying to my initial review and providing a number to call. However, when I called that number, it was the same one I had already contacted — and once again, I spoke with Jovan. Unfortunately, he was just as dismissive and unhelpful as before, rudely stating there was nothing he could do. After going back and forth, he eventually told me that someone from corporate would call me within 24 hours.

I’m not sure why the reply to my review included the same number that led me back to the same unhelpful representative. It gives the impression that the response was more about appearances than genuinely trying to help. I truly hope this time there is a real resolution, not just a reply to look...

Base review of two stars (but leaving three) because while the facility is nice, clean, and the local staff is very friendly, Extra Space hit me with an attempt to nearly double my storage rate after just 2 months (effective after the 3rd) and claimed that my “promotional” rate was ending. However, nothing in my initial sign up process suggested that the rate I was getting was “promotional” or temporary.

The local staff was able to get the increase down to roughly a 70% increase—which is still pretty insane after just a couple months (why I’m leaving this as three stars vs. two).

This is a major bait and switch tactic and in my personal opinion, this is a deceptively bad business practice. Shame on Extra Space for deceiving their customers this way.

In summary, it is a great facility but don’t trust the rate you pay to stay the same even for very short durations. I was expecting an increase after a year, but not after 3 months…nor to the tune of...
