Recently, I shopped at this Pet Supplies Plus location with the intention to purchase fish and aquarium supplies. I must admit the deals on the aquariums and supplies were simply amazing because that's what drew me into the store. The employees were also friendly and polite, but not as informed as I would have hoped.
I had to purchase an aquarium with a reptile lid because the store didn't sell ten gallon aquarium covers. There were only two reptile covers remaining, and one was bent into oblivion, but thankfully the other wasn't. Due to this, I had to purchase a submersible tank filter, which isn't what I wanted at all. I actually wanted a filter where I could hear the water running, as I find it soothing.
It was slim pickings for a female betta fish, but I managed to find one that was healthy. The other bettas were either sickly, older, or male.
My other concern lies in the condition of the tanks. They were repulsive and filthy. Still, I asked for a clown pleco and an employee assisted me quickly. However, the tank also held pleco that could grow quite large and the employee couldn't tell for sure which pleco was which, so I rolled the dice and took what she gave me.
I went home and setup my aquarium with my two fish from Pet Supplies Plus. Nothing else was added because I'm aware of cycling a tank and what not. Unfortunately, less than a week of owning my aquarium, my betta fish and clown pleco started acting strange. My betta was quite literally, ramming herself into the sides of the tank and the clown pleco went from normal hiding, to wiggling all over the bottom of the tank and eventually up the sides. Then I noticed the white spots on them.
Both of my fish had ich. Which means, both or one of the fish had ich to begin with from Pet Supplies Plus. Of course, the moment I noticed my fish had ich, I ran to Petco to buy something to save them. I spoke with one of Petco's employees who was highly knowledgeable about fish and was assured the ich definitely came with my poor fish. Tonight, my clown pleco died and that's why I am writing this one star review.
I'm highly disappointed in the care of the fish, and now I fear, the care of the other animals at Pet Supplies Plus. I do NOT recommend this location at all. Go to PETCO and buy your fish, and while you're at it, everything else!
I absolutely adore plecos and I was already attached to my shy little clown pleco. Shame on you, Pet Supplies Plus!! You don't belong advocating for animals...
Read moreI came in to purchase fish. I have had fish for years. It’s one of my hobbies. First thing I noticed were 4-5 dead betta’s, and some of the fish tanks looked horrendous. I spoke with a girl, Michaela (not sure I’m spelling that correctly), the teenager with the wig that works in the back. I explained what I wanted and she was suggesting all types of extra things that I already told her I didn’t need as I already have fish and complete set-ups. She looked me right in the eyes and told me I should not own fish if I wasn’t going to purchase the items she listed to me. I explained, AGAIN, I didn’t need any extra supplies. She refused to sell the fish to me, shrugged and walked away. I have never in my 34 years been treated like that by an employee of a store, and a teenager at that! Completely rude! I hope management sees this and teaches her some quality customer service. As a consumer I’d expect a pet store to have clean tanks, and fish that are alive. Very unprofessional, and because of that, I will not be coming back. I will switch my dogs from Redford to something else. I don’t want to give my money to a store that treats their customers that poorly. Melissa’s down the street had more to offer and the employees have respect. If anyone is thinking about purchasing fish, or any other animal for that matter, go take a look at the conditions those animals have to live in. I guarantee you’ll turn around and leave. Zero...
Read moreI normally shop at a different store in Fairhaven but since this place was new I figured I would check it out. I will never go back here. The employees never asked if I needed help, actually they never even said a single word to me. The pet food is all over the place and it’s difficult to find cans. They also don’t offer the frequent buyer programs on their foods (which my usual pet store does). The fish were a disaster. Algae was growing in all of the tanks and the gravel was covered in food and feces. There were dead and dying albino cory fish in one tank, the gills were blood red, which means they are suffering from ammonia poisoning, which means they don’t properly maintain their tanks. Then, I overheard the girl working in the fish department talking to customers telling them plecos are fine in a 20 gallon tank.. how is that even possible when they grow two feet long?!! Not to mention she couldn’t even pronounce “pleco” properly. Fish were very over priced for how small they were. Not much of a selection, either. Overall, don’t waste your time here. Go to the other store where they actually know what they are talking about and where you’re greeted with a smile as soon as you walk...
