I had a rather unusual experience during my visit to Fat Cat Art Café. While the idea of combining art with animal rescue is charming in theory, the actual experience fell short in several ways.
Upon entering, we were greeted by a cat at the door. I paused, unsure whether to let the cat out, and instead of a straightforward answer, a staff member responded in a sing-song voice: “There is no longer a sign on the door to not let the cats out, so you may let the cat out. That’s perfectly okay.” A simple yes or no would have been much more helpful and less condescending.
Throughout the visit, the same staff member continued to address us in a similar overly-instructive, sing-song tone that felt more patronizing than welcoming. When one of the cats came over and was picked up by my nephew, we were immediately and sternly corrected: “We don’t pick up the cats. They are medical rescues…” Again, I understand the rule, but the tone was unnecessarily sharp for a supposedly friendly, creative environment.
Later, when my nephew placed his hat on the floor, I was already in the process of asking for it to be picked up when the staff member rushed over with a dramatic warning about tripping hazards. These constant interjections made it difficult to relax and enjoy the experience.
Even something as simple as shaking a bottle of paint led to yet another correction. I was told, again in the same sing-song tone, that shaking wasn’t necessary because the paint doesn’t separate. When I asked if shaking it would cause any harm, she admitted it really wouldn’t, maybe just a little pressure build-up. At that point, the micromanagement felt excessive.
To top it all off, the space was uncomfortably warm. Overall, the atmosphere felt less like a relaxing art café and more like a tightly controlled classroom. The concept has potential, but the tone and delivery from staff seriously diminished the experience.
My experience was so awkward and so passive-aggressive, I checked reviews just to see it was me or a common experience. I was shocked to see it many, many people had the same experience. It just made me sad that a great day out with my stepdaughter and nephew was tarnished by this experience.
Unfortunately, I don’t...

My boyfriend and I were signed up for a pottery wheel class with Pepper at 5 PM on a Saturday evening (6/14). This class cost $74.90 which had to be paid ahead of time. Around 4:15 PM literally as we were walking out the door, his mom called to say his dad had collapsed. His father has a history of heart issues, so my boyfriend left immediately to be with his family. I called the Fat Cat immediately to explain what had happened and ask if we could reschedule or receive any kind of credit.
I was told no, because we didn’t cancel 24 hours in advance. Well, I received a call from my boyfriend at 5:37pm telling me that his dad died. I don’t know about you, but I’m not God, and I can’t predict someone collapsing and dying 24 hours ahead of time. Apparently that’s a requirement here in order to receive any type of compensation.
I never asked the studio for a refund, but wanted to know if was any way to work something out like letting me pick a piece of pottery to paint at home. Again, no. They took my number and told me the owner would call me back. It’s now been more than a week (6/23). No call. No follow-up. Just silence. I guess once they have your money, the rest doesn’t matter.
Please save yourself and avoid booking a class at Fat Cat Art Cafe unless you’re 100% sure that no one you love might die unexpectedly because if something happens, all you’ll get is a policy and told that “I hope things calm...
Read moreWe were looking for something different for the kids to do before they started back school in a few days. Had some friends that went here assumed. My mistake, that they enjoyed it. From the moment we walked in no one greeted us no one told us to pick out an ornament or animal anything ceramic that we could paint. So we picked our own then sat at a table then kind of got a little talking to about don't get started yet till I go over the rules and the kids really wanted to see the cats, reason we went in the first place, but they were not very nice cats and my kids got scratched twice and the staff was very rude, not helpful at all, and never asked if we needed anything or how things were going. Their prices are high, like double of what you can do at another place just 3 mi down the street and dogwood promenade. Also the place was not clean at all I mean they poured a bowl of water and it had cat hair in it which in all honesty is expected It is called fat cat and there's cats three or four but I was okay with that but you go to the restroom to wash up when you get through painting your item and it stinks there's cat litter toilets are nasty it was horrible never again will we be going back. And I don't recommend you go either. Please check out some of my other post for similar places that have this plus other options within the same building and are cheaper, nicer and...
