7pm reservation on a Saturday night - greeting was prompt. I wasn't stoked about the table but I also didn't request a different one, so that's on us. We sat at a very small table in the corner, with barely enough room to squeeze between our table and the one next to us. In fact, several times during the meal, waiters bumped into our table or their table when delivering food. Most of the food was fantastic. My husband devoured the lamb chop lollipops and said they were "ridiculously good" -- we even got another order to-go for the sitter. The burrata was good - add the prosciutto. Main entrees were the sea bass and the bone-in strip. Both were excellent. Added a side of bearnaise which was good. They have a salt flight, which is the greatest addition I've ever seen on a menu. I need this with every steak from now on. Hubby ordered an espresso and we shared a piece of chocolate cake. The pictures don't do it justice. It's huge. The table next to us was in awe. And it was stupid good. Those multiple layer cakes tend to be dry. Not this one -- moist, decadent, not too heavy. It was reallllly good....as it should be for $24 a slice. I probably wouldn't have ordered it if I had seen the price before, but I'm glad I did, and was worth it, if splurging, or if money is no concern. The downfall was the sides. Maybe we just chose poorly, but they were not good. The Dauphinoise potatoes were unseasoned and had a weird thick layer of what looked like shredded cheese on top. The mushroom society looks really good... but it was wet mushrooms sitting in a bed of mushroom water. Zero caramelization if that's what you're looking for. We hardly touched either. It's pricey - it was over $400, including tip and that also includes three glasses of wine. We would likely go back - hopefully they fine tune some of those sides. Other sides, like the lobster Mac and the pommes puree, looked good from the table next door. It's not a place for a quiet dinner. I must have said "what??" a dozen times, trying to hear. The vibe was good, but know it's loud with live music on one side. The building itself is beautiful with stained glass near the bar and thoughtful details throughout. I would give the place 4 and a half stars of that was a thing. The sides kept me from...
Read moreWent there to celebrate a birthday. Started with the mini Moets bottles (as advertized in the menu) for an initial toast. Champagne came out already in the glass and I immediately noticed the bubbles were missing. No way the drink came from a new mini bottle, it had to have originated from a stale, already opened bottle. Tasted to confirm flatness. Not a nice initial impression at all. My guest was exchanged and now served from the mini bottle at the table, but not mine, even though it was clearly not fresh. I didn't feel like making a bigger deal-just left a bad taste in my mouth-no pun intended-especially from a "premium/exclusive restaurant"
The jumbo shrimp were truly jumbo. No complaints there. Nice and thick, fresh tasting.
Salmon ceviche was good, fresh tasting. Very small portion for the price in my opinion.
I ordered the $68 NY Strip, and it was just OK. It was luke warm, and we had waited quite a bit for it-I'm sure it sat waiting for a while. The taste was nothing impressive, I've had better in that price range. I'm not critiquing the quality of the meat, but the preparation. It was pretty bland, yet drenched in either oil or butter. Some salt and pepper would have been nice.
I complemented with a glass of red wine which was merely a finger thick serving. Didn't say anything, I was already kind of over it and unimpressed with the whole drink thing. Without asking or even mentioning, I was later "mistakenly" comped a glass of wine, easily double the amount of the first one. Not sure what's going on with the drink services tbh. Inexperience, lack of care, the ol' switch and bait...Idk.
The Chilean Seabass tasted good, very fresh and mild-no complaints.
The Lobster Mac and Cheese was really good. The portion was basically an entre +, which was great, and guaranteed a nice lobster chunk in almost every bite. I enjoyed the left overs the next day.
Ended with the salted caramel cheesecake. It was a good sweet kick. Just not much of an actual cheesecake- but enjoyed.
At the end of the evening there was a birthday song, some ice cream and table cloth signing. Never seen that before, it was a nice touch.
Overall, it was about average at best. Nothing super remarkable. I have had better $400 experiences. Not sure if I see...
Read moreI came to Jay’s in Fort Lauderdale last Thursday for their Ladies Night and it was everything I didn’t know I needed. Every Thursday from 5 PM to close, they offer free drinks with any food item, and let me tell you, the food alone is worth the visit.
I ordered the chargrilled Oysters Rockefeller, and I honestly haven’t stopped thinking about them since. They were 10 out of 10. Easily some of the best oysters I’ve ever had. They’re baked East Coast oysters topped with bacon, leaf spinach, cream, and a Parmesan Reggiano crust. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced.
For drinks, I had a lemon drop and a French 75. Both were really good, but to be honest, I came back for the oysters. I couldn’t even wait until the next Ladies Night. I came back the following Wednesday because I was craving them so bad.
Eugene was great. He made us different flavored shots and really helped make it a fun girls’ night out.I smiled ear to ear when I walked in and saw him. I know I wanted him to be my bartender again and he remembered me which was even better. Who doesn’t love an attentive bar tender.
The second time I came, I had Jayleen as my bartender as well as my favorite Eugene and a third bartender G. They all were so attentive and I really appreciated that.
Also had a chance to speak to the assistant manager, John and he was a really cool down-to-earth guy from Maryland like me so I enjoyed that connection and he explained how fresh their oysters are. The oysters are lucky duck oysters and like I said, I definitely recommend. They are a must try.
The atmosphere at Jay’s is beautiful. The music is just right and the space has a really nice vibe. It’s perfect for a date night, dinner with friends, or even a birthday dinner or special occasion. It’s the kind of place where you can come for a laid-back happy hour or get dressed up for something a little more special. A really good mix.
If you’re in the Fort Lauderdale area, I definitely recommend checking out Jay’s on a Thursday night. Good drinks, great people, and food that will have you coming back. PLEASE look out for Eugene he is extremely attentive and...
