The products availability and the cleanliness of the Gig harbor Costco store is a five star. The one star review is for the RACIAL PROFILING I experienced at the Gig Harbor Costco self checkout and the exit receipt check. I normally go to the cashier check out lane in the Silverdale location but on my way home from my VA appointment I decided to stop at the Gig harbor location. It was convenient and they had toliet paper vs the Silverdale location. After happily walking through the store and easily finding what I needed and more I approached the checkout area. The cashier lines were too long a the self checkout stands were wide open. I decided to save time and check out on my own. I scanned my Costco card and began to scan my groceries when associate Anne showed up a stood right next to me. I looked around to see if there were any other people that had filled the other self checkout booths and sure enough each one of them were occupied. Anne watched me scan my protein bars them without asking she began to scan all of the items in my cart. At first I was confused because I thought this was self checkout and I didn't ask for help. After scanning everything she commenced to double count all of my items on screen and in my cart. Then Anne proceeded to stand next to me until I paid. I told her thank you for helping me but why did you come over to help? Anne then told me that lately their Costco's inventory has been off and she said that they think it might be because of the self checkout lane. Some of our customers, she proceeded to make air quotations, "forget to ring up items ". Then Anne began check the items and amount total on my receipt and then she signed my receipt. I said oh this is great, now I don't have to wait at the door to have my receipt checked. Anne then said oh no hunny you have to be checked again at the exit. I got to the exit. I waited for my turn and observed the way the associate quickly looked over the customers items in their carts, marked it off ,and they were on their way off. It's was my turn and I assume that this would be easy because Anne had already endorsed my receipt. The door exit checker, I believe her name was Jaclyn, took my receipt and meticulously read each item on the list. Then she counted them. Then there was one item on the receipt that she couldn't recognize by the receipts short description. She searched again and found it. There it is she said. She finally marked it off. I then asked her why she had to thoroughly check my cart when Anne had all ready triple plus checked it. I say triple instead double because Anne actually counted my cart items before she started scanning them while she was silently standing next to me. I mean less than an arms length away. I thought COVID-19 CDC recommendations were 6ft or greater away. You know social distancing. Back to the exit check out associate. Ms Jaclyn began to explain to me that sometimes when people help you they miss stuff. I then told her about the off inventory count that their store had been experiencing due to customers "forgetting to scan items " according the self checkout associate Anne. Jaclyn said oh no, this is just our regular protocol. In all I sent an extra 15+ minutes of my life being overly verified and embarrassed. I am a young black woman, a mother, a wife, a Temple recommend worthy member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a US Navy veteran. I pride myself with having integrity and being honest in all of my dealing with my fellow man. This experience was unacceptable and extremely...
Read moreI used to have no issue with Costco, the only part that I didn't like about shopping there was the crowds, but other than that, I enjoyed getting bulk products and food court pizza/hotdogs for a good price.
I started to get a little bit agitated with their new card scanners. Now you have to wait your turn to scan your card instead of just showing it and walking in, which is ridiculous since you have to scan your card to pay anyway. I mean, I can understand making sure that non-members don't come in and steal, but the scanning mechanism is just dehumanizing. I feel like they sell your info to third parties about your shopping habits. You can't even go in just for food anymore, you have to go in through the entrance side and scan the card! Definitely selling your info.
Today was my tipping point. I went in to just get some food court hotdogs, and of course I had to go in through the entrance side and scan the card like a sheep.
Walked all the way over to the food court, and I guess they updated the way it works now. So, you don't just order and they make it, you have to wait in line and hand the person your receipt. That was aggravating.
I little bit after that, some employee came up to me and said that I can't bring weapons in the store (I had a knife on my belt). Now, I understand that it's a private company, and they can have their own rules for the store, even if I don't think they should have the rule, I can respect it. The thing is, this 'rule' isn't posted anywhere on the building, and I have come in literally hundreds of times before wearing the exact same thing. So, an explanation would've been nice, like did you just implement this change or did you just start enforcing it, or what?
Think what you want, but it's not weird to have atleast a knife (or gun) on you. You should always be prepared no matter where you are. Rules like this don't stop a bad person from doing bad things, but it will stop a good person from potential stopping said bad person because the good person doesn't have a weapon. Something democrats don't understand.
Anyways, I'm never shopping there again. Canceled my auto-renew. Done being treated...
Read moreRacist and awful. If you are a person of color be careful shopping here. There are lots of racist privileged people that think they are better than you and that you must be stealing. The blond manager lady accused me of stealing my own membership card and confiscated my membership card. My husband who is white had to come defend me and show proof of our membership which we've had for over 12 years and she apologized and gave me back my card. I wish I pulled out my phone to record the incident. I don't go here anymore even tho I live in gig harbor I drive all the way to Silverdale to avoid racist episodes from white people and to avoid being humiliated because of my skin color. The manager shes short bigger and had blond hair, she should be fired it's so sad that I live in this community but yet I'm treated like I don't belong due to my skin color. She was very good at reminding me that Im black and that I don't belong and I don't deserve to shop there like everyone else. I pray this review will be read by someone that can make a difference and hopefully this will cause them to train people to be kind and to respect everyone regardless of their skin color. I don't know how to train people to not be racist but be careful who you hire to this day I drive to Silverdale because it's safer and not racist. It's worth the drive if it means I won't be treated badly because of my race. My black don't need to witness evil things like this. This town has a lot of work to do when it comes to...
