Shopping wasn't bad. Bought three items for less than $5. But they didn't have paper to wrap glass purchases.
BUT they made donating so difficult, I left and took the donations to Goodwill!
I asked the clerk "To make a donation, I drive around back. Right?" She replied "Yes, right." Having seen a huge donation truck at the front of the parking lot on Stephanie, I verified that I should drive around the back of the building. She confirmed that.
So I drove around the back of the building. A few doors from the end of the building, I found a huge donation truck with "Castaways" on it, along with phone number, advertising etc. It was parked next to two Dumpsters. There were discarded mattresses leaning against the truck and laying on the ground. I understandably concluded that this was the donation site.
The truck wasn't manned so I called the number on the truck. I said that I was out back and wanted to make a donation. I asked that someone with a receipt come out and accept my donation. No problem, "I'll send someone."
Five minutes later, I called again. I was told to ring the doorbell. I said "I don't see a doorbell. Which door number is it?" I read off the door numbers, but no one with whom I spoke in any of five different phone calls knew their door number. Someone did say "The doorbell next to the large Dumpsters." I was next to two Dumpsters, so continued to think I was in the right place.
During the third phone call, I asked if the person who was coming to collect my donation had perhaps forgotten. The response was "They're very busy." Oh, well that's OK then.
Frustrated and cold, I put everything back into the back of my vehicle and left. But I didn't return the way I arrived; instead, I went exploring. Several doors down and completely blocked by Castaways donation truck and the building itself, I found a loading dock with a huge "Castaways" banner above the door and two Dumpsters parked on the loading dock. Aha! So I again called.
Once again, I was told to ring the doorbell. Once again, there was no doorbell. With a heavy sigh because I was such a nuisance, the female on the phone said "I'll just send someone out there." Well, thank you.
Two young men emerged from a door that was halfway between the Castaways donation truck and the loading dock with huge Castaways banner. And there was a doorbell! Finally. Third location is the charm.
But the older of the two men tried to make me feel stupid for not seeing the medium-sized "Donations" sign. I had missed the sign; the sign that didn't say anything about "Castaways." I told them that I'd spent 20 minutes trying to make a donation and didn't appreciate him treating me as if I'm stupid. I said I'd take my donation elsewhere and wished them a good day.
I left, dropped off two cases of food for Project 150, then drove to the Goodwill truck near my home which was staffed with 4 friendly men. Two came out and took my donation of clothes, books and games while a third man got me a receipt without being asked to do so. Maybe there's a reason Goodwill is as big as it is. They make donating easy! And their employees are friendly.
Even though I now know where their donation door and doorbell are, I will never again shop at or donate to Castaways. Not a single person went an extra inch to facilitate the donation; and they treated me as if I was a nuiscance. I wouldn't want to trouble you again, so...
Read moreI was a regular customer until last week. I stopped in and purchased two household items and 3 books. One book was on the regular shelf. Two books were on the sale shelf for 47 cents. These both had a large black marker stripe across the top to indicate the sale.
The cashier had earbuds in when checking me out, and I couldn't see the screen to view the prices. I looked at my receipt and saw that I was overcharged on the two sale books. They were rung up at $1.97 each rather than 47 cents. I was still at the register, so I pointed this out, and asked for it to be corrected.
The cashier told me no refunds. I explained that I was overcharged, so it is not a refund. I was not returning the items. I just wanted them at the advertised price, or else I would not have purchased them. He confirmed that he did make the error and overcharged me, but held firm that this was considered a refund.
Two more staff members arrived. One offered me store credit. I politely declined and asked for the owed difference returned. The other began to get upset and grabbed the store donation box. He dumped out all the small change out and started to count out $3 in pennies and dimes. I said, calmly, as I was honestly more baffled than angry, that I was disappointed with how they were handling the situation.
The man became more visibly frustrated and pulled $3 out of his wallet. I accepted because at that point I was very uncomfortable and confused. Every store should be able to issue credit via the original payment method (credit card in my case) for employee errors.
I was not upset by the mistake. I was disappointed by the argumentive response from all of the staff and the refusal to honor their advertised prices. I thrift because I'm on a budget. I don't think the store would appreciate me stealing an item, so I'm not sure why they find it acceptable to steal money from me.
I sent a note through their website asking for them to retrain staff regarding refunds vs correcting their own errors, as well as how to calmly address customer issues as opposed to escalating situations. Even training on confirming each price as it is entered out loud would be very helpful to avoid issues like this. In return, I would not leave this review; however, they never responded.
Nevada law, deceptive pricing is illegal: NRS 598.09 section 13.
I was NOT asking for a refund for an item I changed my mind about. I was overcharged, which is deceptive pricing. Rather than file a chargeback, I wanted to resolve it amicably, but all the staff was very poorly trained and defensive. I never raised my voice, used inappropriate language, or made any unreasonable demands. I simply asked for the prices to be honored as advertised. In fact, I said very little, so the outsized reaction very much surprised me.
If you do shop here, I suggest confirm pricing of each item as they are entered. Personally, I will...
