My experience yesterday at Kramer's was deplorable, but I doubt anyone other than Hinsdalians shop at this grocery store so I doubt anyone who cares will see this review! My screen name is a play on the fact that my hobby is buying old furniture to refurbish it and yesterday I was on my way to a friend's house to help them with a refinishing project. Since I knew I was going to be covered in paint and sawdust shortly, I threw on an old t-shirt and slacks, put my hair in a ponytail and had no makeup on. I drove to my friend's house and she had gotten stuck in traffic and wasn't home yet, so I told her that I'd run to go get us something for a late lunch while I waited for her. I decided to run to Kramer's as it was close, so I could get a variety of items from the deli.( I hadn't shopped there in 15 years since I lived in Hinsdale myself) When I went to the deli there were about 6 or 7 employees working behind the counter but only two were waiting on customers, the others were walking back and forth doing God only knows what, but quite obviously ignoring me even though I was standing there holding a number and was next in line, as the two other customers there were already being helped. I was standing there waiting for ten minutes wondering if I should just give up and walk out since not one of the other employees behind the counter had asked me what I needed, cared that I was standing there, or at least called the next number which would have been mine! Then, to add insult to existing insult, a nicely coifed, makeup wearing and oh so obviously from Hinsdale based on her clothing, woman, walked up to the deli counter, stood there without taking a number and in less than two minutes time, was asked what she needed and commenced being waited on!!!! In my utter shock, I loudly asked if they were no longer using the numbered tickets ( you know, the ones that are dispensed at every deli across the United States) The older man who was still waiting on a customer replied very sarcastically, that I would be waited on when my number was called! With that response and no apology from the older woman who totally ignored me and went to wait on " the epitome of Ms. Hinsdale" I walked away from the deli, bought my can of sparkling water that I had grabbed right when I walked into the store, and then asked the cashier if the manager was around. He happened to be walking past that checkout right then so I told him what happened and suggested either one of two things had happened, that one, I was ignored because of the way that I was dressed or two, even worse, because it is quite apparent that I am Hispanic! He vehemently denied that either was the case and that since he wasn't there at the deli, he didn't know what had happened!! So, I asked him if he was accusing me of making up what had just happened to me! He said no, he wasn't, but then just repeated that he wasn't there!! No apology, no offer of escorting me back to the deli to make sure I did get waited on, NADA!!! I walked out of the store, got in my car and drove to Mariano's in Western Spring's where my experience at their deli was much much more pleasant and my turn was based on the ticketed number system and not based on how I was dressed or my ethnicity!! I have experienced this type of treatment in Hinsdale when I lived there which is why I don't live there anymore!! I had hoped that things had changed to some extent since it is now 2022, but apparently I was wrong!! So yes, I am sure that if you checked out all of the people who gave this store such positive reviews I am sure that you would discover that they were all upper middle class, white, and from Hinsdale! Never ever again will I step into this store!! I have too much self...
Read moreI LOVE this store. Been coming here for over 60 years. It's in Hinsdale and it's a privately owned (not chain store) so you know prices will be a tad higher. Nonetheless I still love shopping here every time I'm in the area. They have excellent Rotisserie chicken, a great deli, a big selection of homemade "take it hope and heat it up in the microwave" meals (also check the freezer section by the frozen fish as they sometimes have homemade frozen meals as well). Although this store seems small in comparison to the massive chains, it really has pretty much everything you need and a great selection. Plus the people who work here are really nice. Also I've gotten great help from the meat and deli department for getting special cuts of meat or certain things from the deli...
Read moreUpscale grocery store. Has a large selection of foods, for a small space. I've been going to Kramer's since I was a little girl. I still see some employees that have been there for decades. That definitely says something. Go there for a bunch of fresh, made that day deli items. Most famous "Heavenly Chicken Salad", take one bite, it's can't stop eating it good... You won't be disappointed! Then there is the bakery section, next to the new options every day deli. You want a donut? They make them. Pie? That too. Muffins, cookies, scones and more. Then is the meat and butcher. They'll cut it, get it and make it your way. They love that. When you're walking up the aisles to the check out registers, make sure to look up at the top of the aisle. There's a train...
