There are lots of stores on this island that has some boardgame presence but if I were to name the store that catered the most to boardgames it would be, hands down, The Armchair Adventurer. The owner of the store is almost friendly to a fault and actually has domain knowledge over the products he carries, which really says a lot.
If you park in the theater lot, the store can validate (up to 3 hours, I believe?) Or you can park in the same lot as Costco for up to 2 hours (or longer, after 8pm).
The prices here are never going to beat the online megastores but what a local game store offers is a space for you to actually play the games you purchase. Additionally, there are almost always gamers around free to to try out games with you or help make a recommendation on what games would suit you best.
If you've recently been exposed to the world of modern boardgaming, and are curious as to where to go in Honolulu to find learn more, look no further because The Armchair Adventurer is the...
Read moreThe Armchair Adventurer is a quaint little gaming shop in the Dole Mall with a fairly good selection for the more limited space. There were a half dozen tables set up for people to gather and play games at and the employee (I honestly think it was the owner seeing as how friendly and helpful he was but I didn't ask) was very friendly and willing to chat about games. The gentleman I spoke too was very helpful and even helped me with questions that had nothing to do with his store.
The selection was very up to date so I assume the stock rotates fairly often. The downside of course is you won't find any hidden gems here.
Overall a nice experience and a place I would recommend to any board and miniatures gamers (they also sell quality paints). Just understand it is a little smaller and the parking is a little inconvenient (park at Costco or Lowes and walk over, the cannery parking prices are...
Read moreGreat store with lots of games to offer. If you have a little polite initiative, you can get in a lot of games.
Plenty of demo games and tables available.
The cost for games may be a little higher than online, but they make up for that in attention and service.
I’ve jumped in several games and hadn’t spent a dime, then I bought two games and learned that they order new games weekly.
Don’t be afraid to try a new game or pass on a game you won’t like.
Love coming here.
P.S. finding it the first time can be tricky since it’s on the first floor of the Dole Cannery, opposite the movie theater. I’ve parked in either the structure (Pacific St. entrance is inside the parking lot) or the backside of the Dole Cannery (shared with...
