I have been playing guitar for several decades & in all that time I never thought I could sing. My voice is on the lower end of the spectrum & most popular, hit songs are not in my range. Thus, even while jamming in assorted wedding bands, I stood on the side & wailed on my guitar but felt intimidated on the mic. I thought I couldn’t even sing backup.

After a few lessons with Uncle Wayne, I understood that it was not me that necessarily had a “problem” but most songs are written in a different (higher) “key” than my voice could naturally attain. We transposed all the songs I was interested in to a key signature that was more comfortable. At the same time, we worked on strengthening my voice to be able to sing strong through the entire tune.

My initial contact with Voicemasters Singing School was as the owner of a guitar store. For 29 years, we offered guitar & bass lessons but not any sort of voice lessons. A few of our music students asked for recommendations for vocal teachers. We initially suggested a nearby music studio, but began to hear complaints for our customers about that studio.

Because we valued our reputation, we decided it would be best for me to test out the singing schools for ourselves. Fortunately, Voicemasters Singing School was the closest in proximity. As a guitar store owner and previously a beginning guitar teacher, I could see the “system” the Mr. Kekuewa (Junior) & Uncle Wayne offered. They incorporate the mechanics of singing, along with technique while keeping the activity fun & interesting.

The advantage with Junior Kekuewa is his breath of experience. One slice is that he is an active performing entertainer. For the students that progress to that level, he provides a platform for the student to showcase their talent. Singing was always something I loved and I wanted my kids to learn so I decided to get my 3 daughters to Junior to have them experience vocal lessons and development. They love it, especially my 6 yr old. One day when there at voice lessons with my daughters, Junior welcomed my son to try it out also. My son has a form of Autism, and I wasn't really sure how he would be in the session so I was a little hesitant because Tasi(my son) struggles with many things including focus and speaking clearly. When asked if he would like to try taking voice lessons, I was worried as I wasn't sure how Tasi would be in the session or if he could pay attention. I am happy to say that I am forever thankful to Junior. Junior is really a wonderful teacher and person. Junior has been so very patient with Tasi, he offers guidance, positive reinforcement which resulted in Tasi being able to make long strides in voice training and development where he can now let his voice out more clearly and speak and attempt to sing songs which he would never do in the past. I hope to continue the lessons with Junior as it is helping my son in his daily life. It is hard to find a teacher who has the qualities that Junior has in working with children like my son. Junior is so positive, he is someone who believes in them, has patience, understanding and makes so much extra effort to teach and work with them. When Junior heard my resounding proclamation..."I only sing in the car, alone!". He responded the same as most voice instructors do assuring me that everyone can sing, and yet there was something different there. What I wasn't prepared for was the "stepping into my power" journey that I was about to embark on. Being in the healing and wellbeing arena for the last 20 years, I'm familiar with the words/concepts release and transformation. My first lesson was nothing less than that! I found so much value in being able to move forward and truly believe in myself! Letting go of the limiting beliefs that I had heard growing up and had accepted as real. Sound and tonal healing are so effective. Tones have healing properties that can guide you to your best self and to actually be making the sounds and vibrations with your own voice/vessel raises you to the level of the tones you are singing. I'm so much more self assured and have a new revived sense of "happy self"! I'll be forever grateful to Junior for believing in me until I stepped into that belief on my own!
