This is the worst place to go if you have back problem, or piriformis syndrome, or atrophy from surgery or similar conditions. Went there two different times for different problems within 4 years. Injured by a Therapist the first time and recovery took 6 months to a year. Then recently went back for a different problem involving muscle imbalance and lower limb atrophy from Piriformis syndrome. She, the young inexperienced therapist, created a bulge with a tear at S1L5 from being careless and not following instructions. I went there for weakness in left leg and wanted it to get stronger. She immediately went off track and started looking for back problems. I told her to leave my back alone since I’d been to back therapy for over 6 years and finally got it where the neuropathy had gone away after a lot painful work. I told her to not extend the back since I could only do flexion, which worked and maintained pain and sciatica symptoms. But instead, of setting up a program to build up strength in my legs, she was experimenting with my back and piriformis. She never noticed my legs were spasming while at rest - overprotective state, which should have been a clue of a sensitivity. She didn’t register that an easy exercise, such as bringing a bent knee up in the supine position, created tendinitis after one session. These were direct clues of an over sensitive nervous system and very week muscle tone - I was bedridden for 3-4 months so that should’ve been the first clue to be careful. But instead of listening to my experience: my back was fine and to avoid extension, or trying to manipulate vertebrae, or look for nerve related issue, she went directly to those idea. She should have noticed that my ankles felt like tendinitis after pedaling 5 minutes. That was another clue of weakness -instead she jumped immediately to believing it was a nerve. But after I went home, I started to rehab my ankles myself and finally over it. After that, she decided it wasn’t nerve and added a simple exercise to help. She just couldn’t analyze, listen, or proceed with caution. She had my detailed history, she observed nervous legs, she observed tendinitis after a simple exercise. Even with all the information and observation, she went off track and ignored the symptoms. And then she decided to work and stretch my piriformis, added glute exercises, and threw in some spine rocking at S1/l5 in one session. It was like she was intentionally trying to hurt me so I’d quit coming back. That part worked. I quit in pain, lumbar tear, which was found to be recent and confirmed with symptoms, mri, and that session’s pain. I was trying to get ready for piriformis surgery, with the simple request to help me strengthen my leg. Instead, my legs are unstable, can’t stand and use crutches. And now I have to deal with the lumbar pain before surgery. And I don’t know if this will ever heal. Bottom line: serious injury from someone that didn’t listen, observe, or...
Read moreI would not have been happier with my fast recovery after post ACL left knee surgery. I was fortunate to meet Kim Polasek on my first visit to Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation – Shepherd Square. I was doing my paperwork when I first saw Kim talking to one of her patients, so I decided to ask her a question (since she was the only one nearby the front desk). Kim answered my question and took a look at my knee without been her patient. She was very kind and had a lot of knowledge about what she was doing. Since then, Kim became my physical therapist. In my first week of therapy, I was out of town and I was not able to go to my appointment, so she gave me a list of exercises to perform while I was out of town (the exercises didn't need any supervision). Fast forward, it's been almost nine months since I started my journey with Kim and I have to say that I'm very pleased with the results. To this day I can perform what I used to perform before my injury thanks to the great job Kim has done with me. Kim has a splendid team that backs her up. I loved working with Regan, he was helping Kim and I felt comfortable when working with him. Also, Kasey is been part of the team and is been helping with my recovery (she is super nice). Additionally, Jaime also has been part of my recovery by testing my performance along with Kim.
Overall I have to say that Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation – Shepherd Square is an excellent place for rehabilitation after an injury. Every single person that works there is kind and full of energy. Thank you, everyone, for making this place comfortable for recovery with your...
Read moreMH Sports Medicine has been literally life changing in my recovery from a motorcycle accident. With their help, I will not only be able to walk again and live with a normal quality of life but I may actually be healthier once I leave here than before my accident.
On my first visit, I met with a Dr. of Physical Therapy who performed my assessment. She was more knowledgeable and articulate than anyone I had worked with since the accident. I thought I would only see her for eval then be passed to a trainer, as is common in medicine. Much to my surprise, she is my physical therapist that I work with every week. The other staff at the facility are equally as academically and professionally qualified. Every single one of the interns, fellows, residents, administration, et al. are as friendly and helpful as they could be.
The facility is equipped to handle every level of rehabilitation. It is important to me to be able to not only perform basic life functions like standing up and walking but I also want to regain strength and athletic ability. As I progress in my recovery, I’m beginning to use proper gym equipment - of which they have a full inventory. Once I’m back to performing squats, deadlifts, etc, it will be under the guidance of the same physical therapists that started with me Day 1. I have no doubt that I will ‘graduate’ from rehabilitation as strong and properly healed as the body allows - something that will pay dividends later in life.
I can’t run out of good things to say about MH Sports Med Shepard Square. If you are serious about your recovery and leaving healthier than you arrived, this is the...
