If you are into small, intimate, unique and very cool out-of-the-box architecturally designed accommodations, this is the best place to stay in Houston. I stayed in the tree top room with beautiful light pouring in from both sides of the room each morning. That said, do not expect exquisitely refined service or details. I arrived, having called 30 minutes earlier to let them know when I would be arriving, and no one answered the doorbell. I finally called again and they came to open the door. I was initially put off by the dirt on the front door. Hopefully someone in management will read this and take a sponge to the shmutz on the door. The toilet overflowed. That’s okay. It happens. The strangest part was the envelope on the desk from the maid for tips, but, I stayed two nights, and no one ever came in to refresh the room, take out garbage, make the bed. Give me new towels (I had had to use most of them to wipe up the water from the toilet.) nor was there any information sheet in the room explaining if there was maid service or the hours of breakfast etc. when I did go down for breakfast, no one ever asked me if I wanted cooked eggs. All a little bit unwelcoming. On the other hand, the other guests at the communal breakfast table were fascinating. In all - worth the stay for those of us who can’t stand boring cookie-cutter...
Read moreI love the Modern B & B and highly recommend it to all my friends as an alternative to a hotel or corporate apartment when staying in Houston. Architecturally, I like the open modern space and high ceilings. The area with the kitchen where a widely varied breakfast is served in the mornings is social and guests have the choice of congregating there or retreating to a couch and coffee table. This is a unique place in the Houston neighborhood of Montrose, and it is the only hotel motel or B&B I'm aware of where you can stay in this part of the neighborhood. It is placed in a relatively quiet part of the neighborhood, but on a major enough street to be proximal to Hwy-59 (US-69), on the very southeastern edge of Montrose close to downtown and the museum district.
Modern B & B is a great place for independent people who value community. Having a discussion with Lisa, the owner about what you are looking for is the best place to start. It isn't a hotel. It isn't an apartment exactly. It's something like a friendly upscale hostel with the option to stay for one day or extendedly, but with the privacy you'd expect from a hotel and a great...
Read moreI almost always give restaurants or hotels five stars in rating as I appreciate people's hard work, BUT experience at this place was humbling. I almost could not check in as I arrived in the evening. I should have read more reviews of this place before I booked. Joke on me. Details below:
No staff member was around when I arrived. The host claimed the check-in stopped at certain hour but never told me when. Both Priceline and google map stated check-in time is simply after 3pm. Fortunately, the phone number on google map worked so I did not need to pay for another hotel to spend the night. The host refused to send me the check-in info via email after I requested twice. The phone call with the host to find my room was patronizing to put it lightly.
The next day, I ate my breakfast and left the facility as fast as I could.
If you decide to book, make sure call the host before your trip if you don't get an email. I searched my inbox and spam inbox, I never found one.
Pro: I enjoyed the breakfast and chatting with the guest. Good...
