I'll give you the low down:
Ferries themselves: services have gotten significantly better since hurricane Maria. Before this, the out going ferry from Fajardo was very painful to take for multiple reasons. The ferries have been updated, at least the passenger one, and has nice indoor seating with pretty good chairs and even a nautical map on large flat screen Tvs that show you your direction and current location. And since now the ferry leaves from a closer location and the fairies are fast there you are arriving in only about 30 minutes. Do anticipate some choppy and also some nausea. Sublingual ondansentron or oral diphenhydramine can help; speak with your doctor.
Getting tickets: This is where gets tricky. Locals get preference because they have to be able to leave and come back home. You will likely still make it on a ferry but getting the exact time that you want sometimes prove difficult. Tickets are sold from a window starting two hours before departure time. If you look online you'll find these hours posted. Sometimes the hours are not exact because of coast guard inspections or other reasons. Be aware that you can buy tickets once the window is open for later in the day. That means that for example at 4:00 a.m. (2 hrs before 6am ferry) you could buy tickets for the 3:00 p.m. ferry. I know this because when I went to get tickets at 1:00 p.m. for the 3:00 p.m. ferry it was completely full even though I was 1st in line. This piece of information should save you a lot of heart ache. My recommendation would be to go earlier in the day to get the tickets for the time that you want. There is no way to buy the tickets online. Tickets are however...
Read moreZero star for the ferry service. This is the worst ferry service I ever used. The huge number of staff in the terminal was totally a waste. We ( together with 20+ guests) have to stood in line for 40mins in the middle of the day for one staff to showup ( because this guy took some lunch break ). We were told the ticket can only be bought the same day but not in advance. Why cant someone simply update the ticket window to have some automatic machine or simply sell the next day ticket in the departure terminal ? Next day we have to sit in the ferry terminal for 3.5 hours to wait for the ferry due to unscheduled cancellation. Worst part is no one told us anything when we bought our tickets. Otherwise we could have used our rental car for at least 2 more hours to explore around. The island was pretty but the to and from experience was terrible. All together 2hrs waiting in Ceiba terminal + 1hr ferry ride + 40mins wait in front of ticket window + 3.5hr wait in vieques terminal + 1hr ferry ride. So for anyone who either has a mosquito bay kayak tour in vieques or have flight to catch in San juan, make sure you travel way ahead of time ... All together the ferry would make me not to recommend vieques for anyone who is traveling on a...
Read moreA group of us went to Vieques for a week. We flew with Vieques Airlink to the island and was advised we could ferry back to the mainland. We were due to fly out of San Juan at 5:20pm Saturday. We went and purchase tickets on Friday night for the 11:30am ferry to Cieba and than would taxi to San Juan airport which would give us plenty of time. We got to the ferry at 10:30am to ensure we were early enough and explained to the workers that we had a flight and had purchase ferry tickets for 11:30 to ensure we made it in time. Well needless to say we didn’t get to board the ferry nor did we get to cieba - instead we had to pay for a charter plane to ensure we made our flight. I can honestly say the island was amazing. All the experiences that week were amazing until the end at the ferry. If you are a tourist - do not depend on the ferry during your stay or else you risk missing your...
