TLDR: This is a horrible organization with terrible ethics and incompetent employees. I feel if they cannot do basic tasks relating to adoptions, they shouldn't be in this line of business. This is my warning: DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO ADOPT FROM SAFE HARBOR.
I feel bad giving a poor rating to an organization that helps find homes for animals in need, but I felt obligated to share my experience with safe harbor. We have been working with them for the past week to adopt a lovely cat. I have had at least 4 conversations on the phone about this one cat in particular. Every time I called, they seemed extremely disorganized and confused about basic questions (e.g. what is the status of my application? does this cat have a hold on him?). With that being said, though, this cat we wanted to adopt was worth working with incompetent employees. The icing on the top of the cake for this experience with safe harbor just happened today. We had a HOLD on this lovely cat, and I had called them every step of the way to make sure that we were doing what we needed to do to make sure we adopted him. They even emailed me and said that I was on the cusp of taking him home, they were just waiting for my landlord to call them back (I have a VERY responsive management company, and we were in contact with them and they were going to call back today). So I called them this afternoon to ask if my landlord had called them, and whether we could pick him up tonight only to find out that they had ADOPTED THE CAT OUT FROM UNDERNEATH US. The cat that we had grown emotionally attached to, and were led to believe that we were about to bring him home was pulled out from underneath us without a warning, without a call, without any...
Read moreI offer this to provide some balance to negative reviews that seem unfair. My wife and I have adopted 4 cats from Safe Harbor and spent considerable time in the back room, where the animals were supplied with both dry and canned food (their choice) and the cages were clean in all the aisles (as a dog lover, I checked those out as well). I know that the staff is underpaid and that many are volunteers. Moreover, the staff seemed genuinely to love animals (perhaps the most important requirement).
Finally, because my wife was with me, it was she who signed the papers listing two requirements we had previously not attended to: 1. the cat must NOT be declawed; 2. the cat must NOT be allowed to run unsupervised outdoors. We elected to adopt older cats rather than kittens this time, so they are not quite as sociable as our previous adopted cats (if you wish for a "bed cat," the odds are more in your favor by starting with a kitten, or perhaps with just one cat). On the positive side, neither of our cats has done damage to the furniture despite having its claws intact--and neither has ever missed the litter box. Moreover, keeping the cats inside has no doubt increased their life expectancy (one of our previous cats lost its life to a speeding car and the other met up some ferocious hostile critter).
My only gripe with Safe Harbor is that i heard they once had a fund-raiser in the form of a pig roast. But it's probably not true. Anyone who's been close enough to pigs to experience their superior intelligence and sensitive emotional make-up could not be so cruel and exploitive--especially an organization with the world "humane"...
Read moreFilled out a application for a kitten at my local Petsmart. I called to find out the status of my application and they said she was no longer there and they will be bringing her back on Monday. She said that they will call me back on Monday (NO PHONE CALL was ever made). The lady also failed to tell me about the adoption event they were having. I decided to call Petsmart because we just went on Thursday and saw that the kitten was still there. I spoke with the manager of Petsmart. He went to check if she was still there. She was still there and informed me of the adoption event they were having the following day. The following day went to Petsmart for a adoption a event. Event started at 11 and we arrived at 11:10 to see that the kitten we wanted was already being adopted. The volunteer at Petsmart from Safe Harbor didn't know anything and was to overwhelmed to help me. Decided to go to Safe Harbor to see if they had another kitten we could bring home. The lady at the front was rude and basically didn't want to help my family look for another kitten. We went in the back to look at the cats and dogs... BIG MISTAKE. This place was disgusting and I was crushed to see the poor animals in that state. No one could be found back there they were all in the front talking. This poor dog was bleeding and scared in the back. They were laying in urine and poo. I've been to Shelters and I've never seen a shelter so disgusting. I hope they close this place down and give those animals to another loving and...
