This morning, I placed an order through my Costco app, selecting the La Quinta warehouse since I live nearby. Later in the day, I started receiving notifications that my order had been delivered, but when I checked, there was nothing. I asked my wife to review our security camera footage, but there was no sign of any delivery.
Since I couldnāt reply to the text messages Costco sent me, nor did the provided link seem to be from Costco; I decided to stop by the store after work to clarify the situation. Once there, they called the manager, and I explained everything again. I was frustrated but understood that I needed to go over the details with him to make him aware of the issue.
As I walked with the manager, his response was dismissive. He simply handed me a phone number and said, āThis isnāt with us. Call them.ā I felt completely unsupported. I explained that I needed my items and would call the number from inside the store, I really wanted to get a solution today . At that point, he asked me, āWhat did you buy?ā I responded, āEggs.ā He laughed and said, āGood luck with that!ā before walking away.
His sarcasm and lack of empathy were frustrating. As a manager, his role should be to support customers, not dismiss them with arrogance. To make matters worse, the number he provided was unavailable, meaning I now have to wait until tomorrow to even see if Iāll receive the items I already paid for.
While I know this experience doesnāt reflect Costco as a whole; Iāve always had great service there, it was disappointing to encounter this level of indifference, especially from someone in a leadership position. I hope someone follows up because no customer should be treated this way.
Reflection on Lack of Empathy in Customer Service
This experience highlights a major issue in customer service: a lack of empathy. When customers encounter problems, they donāt just need solutionsāthey need to feel heard and supported. A dismissive attitude, sarcastic remarks, and a refusal to engage meaningfully only worsen the situation, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction.
A great customer service representative, especially a manager, should demonstrate patience, active listening, and a genuine effort to help. Even if the issue is beyond their direct control, they should provide guidance in a way that reassures the customer rather than making them feel like an inconvenience.
Empathy is at the heart of good customer service. Itās not just about fixing a problem, itās about acknowledging the customerās frustration, showing understanding, and making them feel valued. When employees fail to do this, they donāt just lose a sale; they damage the trust and reputation of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy card expired a couple of days prior so I renewed online with an executive membership, an upgrade. Came into the store, scanned it for entry, no problems. Went to the checkout said I was due for renewal. Went to membership services showed them that I had been charged for the renewal, they couldn't figure out what to do. Ultimately after a great deal of back and forth over a long period of time they ultimately issued me a new member number for my old non-executive account and told me to bring back the receipt the next day to get credit for my purchase on the executive membership. Well I never did that because who has time to wait in those god-awful lines just to get some credit. Went back today and it's the same damn thing. Try to check out and it's telling me I'm due for renewal. Go to membership services they say I'm good to go. I've now paid not only for renewal on my Gold Star membership but a separate executive membership which apparently doesn't exist. Even though I've renewed my Gold Star membership The card won't scan. Membership service gives me a day pass, the day pass number has my membership number. Membership number does not work at the checkout. No one knows what to do. I go back and forth again between membership services where Guadalupe is perhaps the most unpleasant customer service professional I've encountered in the past few years and the checkout where people are scurrying about completely overwhelmed by this dilemma that presents itself. I am effectively unable to purchase goods from Costco despite having paid for two memberships. Guadalupe is useless. At least last time the people that tried and failed to help me made sure to facilitate my transaction instead of being the sullen bump on a log the Guadalupe is. Typically people like to work at Costco, these jobs are kind of desired right? Is there no one else that can actually do that job and help people that want to pay money purchase goods? This Costco is awful. I'll be reaching out directly to customer service to cancel both of my useless...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCostco used to be excellent. Now they are no better than any other store, except on price. A while back, I went to get passport photos there. I waited behind one woman who talked and talked and talked to the Costco employee about family, vacations, etc. Neither one of them acknowledged that I was waiting in line. When the woman in front of me finally got done, she turned and ran right into me. When I finally got to the front of the two-person line, the Costco employee was not friendly with me at all! She did not apologize nor even acknowledge that I had to wait so long. She took my passport photos. I had to find them when they were ready; she didn't help. Then the photos were almost unusable; she made them too large, and they had to be slightly rotated to fit on my passport.
A few months ago, I made a 9 am appointment to get my tire fixed or replaced at the tire center. They didn't touch my car until 10:45! Why do they have appointments when they take drop-ins and then make me wait almost two hours?
About two months ago, I bought a big screen TV and microwave oven at the store. While waiting for the checkout, a Costco woman tried to get me to take out a Costco credit card. I said No but she wouldn't take No for an answer. After she asked a third time, I was almost yelling at her, "I SAID NO!" Terrible.
Now I placed an order through Costco.com. UPS is supposed to deliver it. The truck was about two blocks from my home, then delivered a lot of other packages, then went back to the airport. I called Costco to complain, and the woman was horrible, making all sorts of...
