ROOTS the Beauty Underground — Local services in Laguna Beach

Feeling uncomfortable after todays visit. But it’s been awkward for the entire 10 years I’ve been going there. It could be asked, why do I keep going?! I think the best description is: grudges. I returned an item 10 years ago and the owner seems to use it against me in what seems forever. Have never returned or exchanged anything ever since. And the hair dresser, who all I remember is my hair was damaged for years, seemed to awkwardly remember my name 10 years later (and not in a good way) and mentioned my looks, in true Laguna form, and said in a way that it wasn’t a compliment. “You look completely different” what does that even mean?? I didn’t care anyway what they thought about me. And since I don’t walk around ready to jab right back at people or say something about their looks in return, I wasn’t prepared with a comeback. I probably would’ve said, “You’ve been waiting 10 years to say that? So looks is your first thought?” I just thought it was very invasive. I guess not having any plastic surgery and being natural means “different”. I think after 10 years of feeling uncomfortable and bracing for the next dig comment, I think I’m done. But the other staff is friendly, helpful and kind and belong somewhere with better energy. Natural beauty, if you’re reading this: You are young, you are beautiful, and those who have an attitude toward you or judge you says everything about them 🙏🏼 It takes more energy to hold a grudge than to just keep judgement of customers...

This is an overdue 5-star review as I love Roots! I don't even know where to begin– maybe I can start with Laura (owner) and Madison. Laura is always so kind and positive and always welcomes people into her lovely store. She is knowledgeable about all the products and can help make sure you are taken care of! Madison is also just the best too. I love working with her and she is a guru when it comes to being a makeup artist– she also knows each product in & out! Madison is great– so much so that I wouldn't have anyone else do my wedding makeup other than her!

For my wedding, I coordinated with Roots and have not been disappointed. Laura and Madison were seamless to work with and made my experience so wonderful. They made it easy to do a trail run and planning was a breeze. I couldn't recommend them enough if you want your makeup done from Roots for your wedding day.

Lastly, I want to mention the products they source. You can trust the products are high quality for your skin/body. I feel like each product was sourced with intention. Every time I visit, I always find something new. I have never bought anything from Roots that I didn't like. Actually, I have found some brands/products I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for Roots!

First off, their return policy is clearly described on their website. They do not do returns or exchanges, especially on opened products. It's not the store's fault. They carry are small, organic lines and the returns to the actual company are impossible (it's not like buying at Nordstrom, where a return doesn't make a dent in their profits). They do offer samples, and as someone with very reactive, acne prone (and almost 9 months pregnant) skin, I love that.

Secondly, this store is amazing. Their selection is incredible, they take TONS of time with you and they are super sweet and knowledgable. I live 2 hours away and came here just to celebrate my birthday. If I lived closer, I would probably be in Roots every day!! So, i'm sure my husband is glad we don't live closer. (Too bad I can still order online!! Joke's...
